How Did You Learn Spanish?

I would love to hear how all the expats have done learning castellano while in Argentina. In high school I jumped between 3 languages and never managed to become decent in any of them. I find languages difficult to learn. I also struggle to get enjoyment from the process itself - more frustration than anything. Is it necessary to study or will a person be able to become fluent from simply being around the language for a long period of time? If anyone has any tips I would love to hear it. I'm thinking about downloading some spanish movies and putting on english subtitiles. I am at a stage where I can communicate on a very basic level to get by but not enough to be able to properly express myself. My partner is Argentinian and speaks to me in english when its clear I have no idea what she is trying to say.

How To Work In Argentina Without A Local Contract?

I had posted a few months ago about the possibility of transferring to work in Argentina for the same multinational company that employs me in Europe and has a regional office in Buenos Aires. I gained some insight from your replies of what to expect. Some of you said that you are still earning your salaries in your original countries therefore not so exposed to the devaluation and inflation.

The negotiations with my company have been ongoing for a few months, way too long, it is very mind exhausting. I wish to conclude this matter once and for all with them (accepting or rejecting) and I need your help by learning of your personal situations. The big bosses definitely want me there and I am willing to make the move but it seems that HR is the one causing all the trouble. They are saying that due to Argentinian legislation I need to sign a new contract, an Argentinian contract, which means my full salary would be paid in Pesos in Argentina. The conditions and benefits are good, but what I am thinking is that by the end of the year it is likely I will have lost a lot of it with devaluation as well as my purchasing power. And if I do end up saving anything how will I take it out of the country?

The big bosses are open for discussions and ideas so I have to do myself the work that HR should be doing. I would like to hear your experiences on this matter and if possible specific clauses or contracts, or even legislation. Please advice on what to do or contact me directly if you would like more privacy.

Thanks in advance for your help once again.

Marriage?

My question is probably redundant, but I couldn't find any definitive answer on these forums.

I'm currently in a masters program and going through the steps to get residence/dni. At the same time, my girlfriend has suggested we get married as a quick route to residence. she's nice like that.

My question then: is there any advantage to one over the other, student visa/dni vs. getting married. Common sense tells me that with marriage you get more benefits (obra social, etc.) but I don't have anything to back it up.

Anyone care to weigh in?

Best,,

Small Group, Intermediate Spanish Classes

Hi all. I'm looking to improve my Spanish, whilst meeting some people at the same time, so I would love to find a small intermediate class, preferably in zona Norte (I live in Olivos).
Ive been living in BA for a year and a half, but speak English with most of the people I know here, so my Spanish is still very limited.

Any ideas?

Hello everyone! I've been living in BA (zona Norte) for just over a year and a half, and spend most of my time with my Argentine boyfriend and his family and friends, but would love to meet some expats out here.

I'm 30 years old, from the UK, I work as a nanny here, and do art and yoga in my spare time. My favourite things about Argentina are the weather, the food, and the wine, and I indulge in all three whenever I can!

Glad to have finally signed up to this website, I look forward to seeing what's happening in the world of BA Expats that has evaded me thus far!

Young Children- How Long To Learn Spanish?

Hi

We moved to Argentina in February. Our 2 year old and 4 year old have been going to a local kindergarten which we're very happy with. However it is noticeable that our two children are getting frustrated at being unable to communicate with the other children as the other childrn speak very little English and our children speak very little Spanish.

Did any other expats get private Spanish tutors for their children or did they eventually just lean it through playground chat?

They are only at school in the morning and the teachers are great as they are English speakers and the school is a bilingual institution.

Any advice welcome!

Reluctance To Prescribe Narcotic Painkillers?

The other thread in the Newcomer's forum (now locked) reminded me of something I've been wondering about for a while. Has anybody else noticed a strong prejudice from doctors against common narcotic pain medicine like vicodin and percocet? Contrary to what House portrayed and what someone posted in the other thread, vicodin is a relatively mild painkiller (prescribed for moderate pain) whose main risk is actually the Tylenol component (usually 500mg).

As a former "extreme" sport athlete I've certainly had my fair share of vitamin V and variations prescribed over time, so imagine my surprise when after my appendectomy I was prescribed not oxycotin or vicodin but some quite useless hi powered ibuprofen called ketolac. I wrote it off as a strange painful quirk until a few weeks ago when I ended up in the hospital with 2 cracked ribs. After waiting a few hours (SAME took me to a public hospital) I got a shot of depo, a kiss on the head and a prescription for ibuprofen. When I told the doc that while I appreciated the prescription for an over the counter headache pill, I would like a prescription for a real painkiller, he told me that they don't prescribe opiate based medicine.

Has anyone else noticed this? Could it be because of the import restrictions?

Preliminary Results Of Videla´s Autopsy Revealed

"Judiciary authorities today revealed the preliminary results of the autopsy practiced on the body of dictator Jorge Rafael Videla, who died last Friday in prison at age 87.
His family is expected to meet Federal Judge Juan Pablo Salas today and be notified about these results.
According to the report, Videla had a “traumatic death” as he fell in the shower five days before he passed away. That fall had provoked numerous fractures, aggravated by the consumption of anticoagulant medication which caused an internal bleeding that led to a heart attack, the report added.
Last Friday, Videla was found inside his cell at the Marcos Paz prison, “with no pulse or pupil reaction.” That was the initial report unveiled Friday by the Federal Penitentiary Service.
Videla, icon of probably the worst era of Argentina’s history, died in prison where he was serving multiple life sentences for different crimes, among them, the systematic theft of babies during the dictatorship." From the Buenos Aires Herald.

Hi All,
I have been spending most of my time in BA since 2008 so have one of the initial reciprocity Arg visas in my now expired passport. When I 1.5 yrs ago got a new passport it came with a new number. I have since been having trouble going through immigrations twice in Uruguay, not the one time returning from the states. The Arg computer system has the visa with my old passport number not the new. . . does anyone have experience with having this switched to their new passport? I will be flying back to the states in June and will have overstayed my 90 days by 2 wks so am thinking of either going to immigrations to extend or just paying the fee at the airport.

The Standard K Replies

Why is it that when you ask a K about anything they will always always blame someone else and/or change the focus and say that someone else is worse.

Do the K's steal from the state?
K: Memen stole a lot. Macri steals and Clarin absolutely steals (do you not know they owe 200 million to the state etc etc).
Me: How is that relevant???

Lanata says they steal, do you believe it?
K: Lanata used to use cocain and is fat!
Me: How is that relevant?? It doesn't matter where the accusations come from, they are still valid and worth looking into.

Hows the economy going in your opinion?
K: We have 40 billion dollars in the bank!!
Me: That's not an answer!

Even if that's true (currently 38 billion if you chose to believe that) that's still the lowest in years!
K: It's much more than in 2002! This is the "decada ganada" didn't you know?
Me: Hows that relevant? It's a lot less than last year or the year before or the year before...

The soya price is higher than ever and all other LA countries (except venezuela and equador) are swimming in dollars shouldn't there be more here?
K: Eh, you are a foreigner and you don't understand. Also did I mention that we have 40 billion dollars in the bank and that Clarin steals and is a monopoly and "da asco"?
Me: Hows that relevant?

A lot of foreign think tanks and intellectuals are saying that Argentina is heading for another crisis, what do you think?
K: FMI sucks, look what happened when we listened to foreigners!
Me: How is that relevant? Also; sure, Kicillof, Moreno and company are more clever than the whole world, that makes sense.

El pais (in spain) said something negative about the queen, what do you think?
K: They are in crisis, jaja, loads of unemployment, they suck.
Me: How is that relevant? Also, please know that a crisis in a developed country is not the same as a crisis here, it really isn't.

50 kids die each day of starvation in a country that has spent 4000 millions on "futbol para todos", what's your take on that?
K: Indec says there's hardly any poverty (and also I am pretty sure Clarin starves kids to death, maybe Macri as well).
Me: Ok. So in fact it's true then, there really are less poor here than in Switzerland, I believe that, sure, sounds plausible. The people I see in the barrios here in the north are just faking poverty, typical.

Is it ok to steal as long you steal less then previous goverments?
K: Memen stole a lot. Macri steals and Clarin absolutely steals (do you not know they owe 200 million to the state etc etc).
Me: Hows that relevant?

Now, I know why they all answer the same (a friend of mine is a campora "imposter" and get's all the emails about how to counter-attack anything anyone throws at you) I just don't understand why having a proper discussion about a subject is so hard and why everything has to be black and white, it's never "yea I like some things, others not so much", it's always "I love" or "I hate". (kudos to MathiasBA for actually admiting to like some things and not others - that's a first).

They have fucked up a lot, most governments do, but most governments when they do learn from it, talk about it, analyze what went wrong and do better next time. Here they just ignore it and plan their next move against the evil of the world (Clarin obviously) .

Obviously the Kirshners have done loads of good and yes Macri and Clarin are evil and Menem was a cunt but that's really isn't the point. The questions are; have they done enough? Is what they are doing right now correct? And is what they are doing right now going to benefit future generations?

There's a stark difference between Nestor and the queen, at least it seemed like he had control over things and even some kind of plan, the current government reminds me more of an improvisational theater show - and not a very good one.

Apologies for the length of this post. I will now go and open some wine. (btw; when are we getting "vino para todos"?).

P.S: This is not an attack on anyone in this forum, is what I see in real world discussions around these subjects.

Fibertel Internet Speed

We have Cablevision HD + Fibertel 6 megas and have so for about 6 months (previously 3 megas). Speed has been fine up until the last few weeks where have noticed real slow down, so yesterday rang up and complained and found out something interesting that with the 6 megas they guarantee the following download speeds:
- national servers (descargas nacionales): 580 kb / s (nowhere near the 6 megas)
- international servers (descargas internacionales): 290 kb / s (I think from memory)

Anyhoo, mine was downloading at about 400 kb/s and 100 kb/s. They said they would look in to it, then when they called back late and re-did the tests the speeds had miraculously jumped up to around their guaranteed thresholds! I asked the guy about how they managed the speeds and he said he didnt have any idea that it was down by their networks department.

I looked on the net and noticed a lot of people complaining of same thing with Fibertel, that their internet speed decreases miraculously over time.

Must admit I am a bit of an amateur on this, but to me it seems that new customers get faster internet then basically once you are in they slow it down over time and just maintain it around whatever threshold they guarantee (which IMO is bloody low anyway!)?

Id be interested to know what kinds of download speeds every1 is getting as well and whether you guys are having issues?

FYI I am in Palermo.

Appears they are thinking about pushing back the starting time of the Sun night football matches so they start at 2130 (now they start at 2030) thus clashing with Lanatas program which kicks off at 2200. First one could be next Sunday night (May 26) when Newell´s play Boca in Rosario.

Haven't seen much on yoga on the forum; here are my 2-cents about what I've found over the past few weeks of trying out several classes around town. Would be great to hear what others have found!

+BA Life Center (Alto Palermo): Yoga for English-speakers; variety of classes twice a day; beginner to intermediate yoga; focus on flow - sun salutations, warrior poses, etc.

+DeRose (various centers): Yoga for pros; more of a health club (monthly payment) than simply a studio to take classes. Community seems close...bordering on cult-ish. Professional; focused on intermediate to very-advanced yoga (tricky inversion poses, etc). Every day classes

+Casona Cultural Humahuaca (Almagro): Yoga for hippies; mantras at beginning and end; poses can be awkward/ a bit weak. Friday class

+Estudio Freedom (Almagro): Yoga for grannies; focus is more on breathing exercises than poses. Mon-Thurs. class

+Práctica Yoga; with Celeste Campos (Almagro): haven't tried yet; seems promising.

Is Speaking Spanish A Necessity?

Hi guys,

I’m new so I apologise if this is a stupid question!

My company in Britain are looking to relocate me to the Campana area near Buenos Aires for a year, it only problem is that I don’t speak a word of Spanish. My company assures me that English will be spoken within the workplace of my office as is their policy as many non- Argentinians work there. My accommodation and visa will be provided for.

What I’m wanting to know if it is tough to survive outside work if I don’t know the language? Of course I will try to learn basic phrases but doubt if I would be able to learn anything of substance in the short time I will be there.

Thanks!

I'm not really excited about paying the $200 extra for that bag, when I could probably wait unit October to get some things, but thought that someone else might want to help cover the cost of that 3rd bag if they needed some things from the States. I'm pretty loaded down with my own personal electronics, so bringing more back might be difficult unless it's something you'd pay the duty on.

¿lugar Para Dormir?

Hablo cinco (5) idiomas (español, ingles, aleman, frances, holandes) y he dado clases particulares de ingles a estudiantes.

It's a short term rental -- got such good advice on where to advertise it on a previous post, I'm going to the BAexpats well again! Any suggestions on good furniture places, ideally with good prices. Looking for furniture that's modern, stylish, suitable for modern-type apartment. Will probably go to design center, but don't know if there are other places with similar design feel in Palermo Hollywood or Palermo Soho or other places that good and possibly with better prices. Anyone have any recommendations???

No Toilet Paper. No Butter. The Future Of Argentina?

Venezuela has run out of toilet paper. Butter, and many other basic products are extremely hard to find.

CNN news video here http://edition.cnn.com/video/?/video/world/2013/05/16/romo-venezuela-paper.cnn

There are supporters of Cristina on this site and I think we seriously do appreciate having other points of view. Can someone please explain to us the rationale behind using the Venezuela model as the basis for the economic plan for Argentina? So far, all I have heard are broad generalizations and very incomplete, loosely-connected sound bites wrapped in patriotic hyperbole.

Those of us who actually know a bit about economic policy would be very interested in hearing what the specific points of the plan are. For example, I can tell you the intention and effect of the US Federal Reserve's interest rate policy on stimulating the economy and helping businesses to invest, etc, etc. I'm looking for the same regarding CFK's economic policy and plan.

I'd love an intelligent discussion on this government's plan for Currency Controls, Import/Export, National Debt Management, Jobs Creation, Small Business Investment, Inflation/ Consumer Price Index, GDP growth, Retail Sales.

Thanks in advance,

A Trip Of A Lifetime...

I'm looking to see one other Latin American country after I leave Buenos Aires in mid-July. I've already been to Chile (Santiago, Valpo, and Patagonia) and Brazil (Sao Paulo and Rio). If you had to recommend a city/location to visit, where would you recommend?

I'm thinking: 1) Bogota; 2) Panama City; 3) Lima?

Thoughts to help me consider: I'm trying to end up in DC, and trying to do this trip on the cheap!

So, 1) destinations without reciprocity fees and lots of direct flights from BA and to DC would be helpful! 2) Not opposed to taking a bus from BA if it is reasonably priced and not totally uncomfortable!

(Kind of like a puzzle...how to put together the pieces to save money but not miss out on an incredible experience.

How Cold Does It Get?

Hi superpeople who are saving my sanity as we prep to move in June. I have been to BA many hot months, but never for winter. But, we're moving in late June.

So, how cold does it get? I read high 50s and that doesn't sound too cold - and rainfall is less in July than January. But, is it a damp-cold? Are you often outside freezing?

Do places crank up the heat so that you wear layers like the US North East?
Any tips wanted! We're a family with 2 young kids, me/mom and dad/a porteno who doesn't seem able to describe or remember things

GRACIAS!

Advice Please: Property Rental Business

Looking for advice. I own a recently built studio apartment in Palermo Hollywood. I would like to rent it out as a short-term rental for anywhere from days to months, most likely to people traveling from English speaking-countries to Buenos Aires for short stays e.g. to study Spanish, learning tango, etc. Wanting to know if anyone does this, and the question specifically is how do get the word out? I prefer not to use an agency who I understand typically take a big cut, and prefer to just take handle renting it out myself. I’d look to charge a very reasonable rate based on what I’ve seen advertised for apartments of this type.

Is anybody doing this thing? And if so, how do you go about marketing the flat? Any sites you recommend in particular? Other ideas? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
