    Some expat observations

Like I said, in theory, that's what happens. But I just spent 3 months in Madrid, Paris, and Berlin, where I met a number of Americans there on expired tourist visas, working en negro or living on savings, and upon leaving, were stamped through by airport immigration without a word. Or they...

How many of you want to leave Bs As?

Oh, did your kids' university charge local BA rates for the term abroad? Just curious because I have a friend at USC, who is currently doing a semester in Edinburgh. USC is charging her regular tuition, even though the school in Scotland is actually $11,000 cheaper per semester

    Some expat observations

I actually know a handful of Americans and Canadians who arrived in Spain, France, or Germany on tourist visas and stayed or are staying for a year or so. There's always a risk of being fined for overstaying a Schengen visa, but in practice, none of them have been.

    Beware of RentingBA (not RentinBA)!

It's especially disappointing that this guy is a fellow expat, and clearly uses that fact on his website to drum up business ("Why RentingBA? We are American-owned and operated...") Honestly, as the owner of an online enterprise and a former poster on this forum, you'd think he would have been...

    Advice on...

I have - a couple of little places along Santa Fe. The 'brands' they sell are the bo-bo ones you find at Ross and Marshall's, as well as outlet stores. The items looked to be in pretty rough shape, but they were "FROM MIAMI" (ooh la la.)

Buying dollars legally gets even harder now

So for those of us who have dollars to sell... what is the latest rate being offered at the cuevas?

    Unaffected Middle Class

A local friend of mine -- who has absolutely zero documented income and hadn't even been thinking about getting a credit card -- recently received an unsolicited application in the mail from Banco Galicia. She thought, "Hmm, why not?", filled out the app, and had her new card within a week.

Help finding food that tastes like home for the Argentina Independent

Sadly, in a couple of weeks, the biggest stock of imported products in BA will be in the giant suitcase I've just brought back from Europe. It's always been in-stock at Disco, up until I last checked in January. It's Brazilian Segafredo, not Italian, which must be why it costs a third of what...

    Goodbye Sarkis, Hello Chef lusef

Ah, finally! I can come out of the closet and announce that I've always secretly felt the same way. Sarkis makes me feel like I'm eating out of a trough -- giant portions of mass-produced dishes, with the main flavors being "oil" and "salt." I've been much more impressed with smaller places such...

    Is BsAs over rated?

I don't really go out in BA (did all of my partying in NYC during my college years), but one difference between the Argentine and Anglo nightlife cultures is that Argentines can go out without getting staggeringly drunk (like many-to-most Brits do.) Which might help explain how they can...

    Found: Donuts

Really? Aw, that's sad. I mean, KFC I can understand (I have yet to meet a foreigner not justifiably horrified by the "bucket of chicken" concept), but Dunkin' Donuts is at least better than those dreadful Starbucks pastries I always see locals chowing down on.

    Current OSDE info?

I'm returning to BA for just 2 months and am looking into private medical insurance options. The alternative is to extend my current World Nomad travel insurance, but this doesn't cover some routine exams I'm due for (dentist, OB-GYN, chequeo anual, and I'd like to see someone about a horrible...

    Found: Donuts

Well, Subway and Wendy's have made their way down, so perhaps it's only a matter of time? Between the voracious Argentine sweet tooth and weird affinity for American chains, I can't imagine that KK (or Dunkin') wouldn't be successful...

Problems with purchasing groupon and other similar sites

I used my American Charles Schwab debit card to buy Groupons back in December & January... no problems whatsoever.

    Amazing how expensive BsArs is

Hey, a meat-free lifestyle is cheaper no matter what part of the world you live in ;) But a good percentage of expats are earning a local salary. So the local wage-vs-expense ratio is relevant. For those who came down here to feel like high rollers on their foreign currencies -- and are...

    Amazing how expensive BsArs is

This this this. In Europe, there are discount stores such as Aldi and Lidl (and in the US, Trader Joe's, Target, and - boo - Wal-Mart) that allow customers to save significant amounts on groceries. The interiors are often depressing and lines are long, BUT consumers have a choice. Yesterday I...

    Amazing how expensive BsArs is

Nope, spelt is a completely different grain... it's the low-gluten cousin of wheat. It's my favorite; I highly recommend it if you can find it!!!

    Amazing how expensive BsArs is

Oh, not in Buenos Aires. I wish. But 100% spelt bread is quite popular in Ireland, where I am right now (1.99 for a loaf.)
