    International Operator in Argentina

Yeah, don't call collect. I am sure it will cost you a fortune. Skype works pretty well (a few problems for me), but the Locutorios are fantastic and super cheap. And even landlines with phone plans are still very expensive compared the USA.

    Finding Apartments Elsewhere

I found several great places using craigs list when I first arrived 18 months ago, but I know not everyone's experience was the same. Your best bet is find a place but only rent for one week. Once you are on the ground, you will find it a lot easier. Always remember that Argentines have become...

Aurora australis visible in Ushuaia ?

I understand that the sun (which generates the particles that cause the auroras) is in a quiet phase at the moment, meaning very little auroras. But you certainly see them in the south of Argetina. I have seen the northern version at latitude 46, although admittedly, that is very rare. Either...

anyone have suggestions for a quick weekend get-away?

For an overnight, I would suggest Colonia. Stay at one of the little hotels downtown, not the big ones outside of town. But Colonia is tiny and not woth more than a day. If you haven't been, go to Montevideo the next day - it's like a very slow Buenos Aires. Charming, nice people and very cheap...

    Whole bean coffe?

Isn't "north of Seattle" Canada? Hmmmm, a cold country with great coffee!! In my experience, ground coffee here is pretty bloody good (and I am a coffee fascist). That said, the Coffee Store (tienda de cafe) sell pretty good whole-bean coffee.

    Biking in Buenos Aires?

Not sure about rentals, but I do know there is a great bike path alongside railway tracks that runs from Vicente Lopez all the way to Tigre. Nice easy ride and safe!

Bringing a car into Argentina (and selling it too!)?

I spoke with someone recently who drove down here from the US. Apparently selling your car here in Argentina is a nightmare, but is easier in Uruguay, just acorss the river. That's where he sold his car. Good luck.

    Learning Spanish

I would really suggest you take a course or high a tutor (30-35 pesos/hour). You want to check UBA (http://www.idiomas.filo.uba.ar/extranjeros/ingles/cursos/regulares.htm) they have two-month intensive courses that begin in March.

    Argentina vs Colombia?

Comparing Bogota and Buenos Aires is impossible. I am a journalist and have now spent 18 months in South America. Columbia is full-on Latin America, culturally and otherwise. Facinating, challanging and colourful, but not that easy to assimilate if you are coming from Europe. Buenos Aires, on...

    Citigroup and/or HSBC question...

CitiBank used to be great. Most of my money goes to a Citi account in NYC. As long as you used a Citi ATM (at every Citi branch in BA and there are 50+) there were no fees and the exchange rate was decent. But since the whole credit crunch bullshit (read: MBAs screwing the planet) they have...

    Cartridges for US printer

I just bought a Ink Jet printer here in BsAs, which as it turns out is a US model not available here. So I have not been able to buy cartridges (Epson type 69) for it. Any ideas? Do I just need to bite the bullet and buy a local printer? Cheers, RR
