    Sushi take out recommendations

If you talk to people, its easy to ask if they are korean, or chinese, or japanese. If you have travelled to any of those places, its easier to tell. The Japanese Argentines are largely from Okinawa, and they have a big Okinawan community center on San Juan and Jujuy. It has an Okinawan...

    Sushi take out recommendations

There is a substantial Japanese/Argentine population. over 65,000 people. Which means a ready market, and a supply of experienced japanese chefs. There are something like 2000 Indians. Hence the paucity of Indian food. plus, Indian food is spicy, and argentines hate spicy food. There are also...

Giving up on my iPhone 13

The little apple "lightning" charging slot is fussy and badly designed, and does get linted up, or worn. A mag safe charger is faster, easier, and doesnt wear out. I am still rocking my old Iphone 10 (XR) and it has two sims in it, so I just have to change the setting on primary line when I land...

Argentina’s Rich Neighbors Cut Back on Visits Due to Strong Peso

Historically the majority ( usually a minimum of 75%) of tourists to Argentina have been from South America. US and Euro tourists are usually below 20%. The mercosur tourist is financially more important. So this is not good news.

Looking for Advice on Apartment Demolition Costs

the reason the lights are dangling by wires is that its traditional to take the light fixtures with you when you move, and, in their place, you leave the two wires and a socket- its called a portalampara, and the idea is that you will at least have light while you are remodelling and until you...

French sports chain Decathlon to open 20 stores in Argentina

Pizza Hut is going to hurl itself against the wall one more time? will they never learn? And in a city with most likely more lingerie stores per capita than any other on earth, Victoria's Secret? Seriously? The cadenas that have succeeded are almost all homegrown, with argentine money and...

French sports chain Decathlon to open 20 stores in Argentina

In the US, Columbia is considered to be cheap, outdoor-like clothing for urbanites. And North Face pretty much lost all credibility with real climbers when it was purchased by Vanity Fair, the ladies lingerie company, in the year 2000.

How Argentina’s ‘mountain wines’ are taking it to new heights

One of the things they dance around in this article is climate change. My son is in the wine industry, and he tells me that french and italian grapes are making sweeter, more alcoholic wines now, due to higher mean temperatures in europe. But the same varietals of grapes, as mentioned in the...

French sports chain Decathlon to open 20 stores in Argentina

I would add that Columbia has had an Argentine based subsidiary for some years now, and is not, like, say, iphones on mercado libre, bringing things in one at a time or illegally. Its doing everything legitimately just like Decathlon would, and its products are manufactured in Bangladesh and...

French sports chain Decathlon to open 20 stores in Argentina

All their competitors that sell legitimately in Argentina double or triple the prices here. For example, a Columbia Sportwear puffer jacket that costs $120 in the usa is 335,000 pesos on mercado libre. obviously, vamos a ver, but I continue to think that until import duties and the frictional...

French sports chain Decathlon to open 20 stores in Argentina

How can any given company offer lower prices if it must pay the same taxes and tariffs as everybody else? Is it a case of losing money on every sale, but making it up on volume? I find that Zara, for example, is noticeably more expensive in Argentina than in other countries. Carrefour is...

Why Amazon is struggling to crack Argentina

seems like its pretty obvious that unless they let Amazon packages get shipped direct to argentine homes, with no taxes or duties that are not paid by Amazon and included in your purchase price, Amazon will never succeed here. And its pretty obvious that Milei does not have alternate sources of...

Inflation Is Falling, But Argentines Are Not Yet Better Off

the rate of increase of inflation is slowing. all the previous inflation is still there, in the form of higher prices. salaries are not going up to match. So it means things are still bad, still getting worse, just doing it at a slightly slower pace. Hurray!

Argentina's "anything-but-Libertarian exchange controls..." IMF meets in BsAs

export taxes are a pretty sad revenue stream to depend on. But the rich people in Argentina have successfully resisted tax reform for decades, and they pull milei's strings today, too. Argentina makes most of its revenue from IVA tax which is highly regressive, and from export taxes on major ag...

Does anyone else feel there might be a peso collapse this year?

Austerity was a failure in Greece. It caused a bigger depression, and took longer for the economy to bounce back, as opposed to other european countries which instead, came back quicker. In general, austerity, as an economic solution, has failed to work. Its a classic case of ideology insisting...

Does anyone else feel there might be a peso collapse this year?

In the last 17 years, I have seen prices relative to dollars go up, and go down. I have not seen a "crash", nor have I seen prices in pesos go down. I cant imagine we will see peso prices fall. Instead, we can only hope incomes will go up, which is what has happened in the past.

I Went To See A Band...

I have been a fan of the "electronic tango" style of music for over 15 years now. This is a style that was originated in the late 90s, early 2000s, and its basically tango music with a very light frosting of modern instrumentation. I have traditional friends who swear its heresy, but most of...

Does anyone else feel there might be a peso collapse this year?

all sandwiches are that much now. 3 migas are over 5000 at the cheap places now. But some things havent gone up anywhere near as much. In February, some kioscos were selling monster energy drinks for 3000 and a can of coke for 2000. Today, monster is 3000, sometimes 2500, and a can of coke is...

Does anyone else feel there might be a peso collapse this year?

The thing is, nothing milei has done has had any effect on the practical reality of Argentina prices for imported goods being basically double the dollar cost outside of Argentina. There is no reason to expect this to change. So anything imported will track the exchange rate, not “ inflation”...

Does anyone else feel there might be a peso collapse this year?

since everything is priced in pesos, if the peso becomes less valuable against the dollar (the traditional meaning of a collapse) then most things will be MORE expensive for Argentines, particularly anything imported. Unless this is somehow accompanied by huge pay increases, I cannot see how...
