French sports chain Decathlon to open 20 stores in Argentina

True, once someone broke down taxes for one product, and with retail price abroad did not come close to half the price here. Also Mercosur and pure Argentinian products are also way too expensive. It's greed mostly. Because they can. And zara is just riding the wave, because why not? Decathlon...

Inflation Is Falling, But Argentines Are Not Yet Better Off

They can't, it would be absurd, as often it was in the past. And unsustainable. I remember 10 years ago salaries were higher than in Spain for example, and not enough to back them. Peso needs to lose against usd steadily, salaries need to adjust a bit and prices should stay the same. Now, to...

Does anyone else feel there might be a peso collapse this year?

As I see it, price increase already happened on expectations of peso fall, that did not happen. But prices pretty much stayed elevated, so I guess there isn't much space for increase, at least at basic products. I'm not huge fan of milei, but I really hope he has some masterplan to get this...

Question re: entry to Buenos Aires with 1 way ticket from US

I advise you to have plan B ready. It happened to me (from eu though), so I ended up paying ticket to montevideo, otherwise I would not be able to board the plane, no matter anything. So go early to the airport and check some affordable flex tickets beforehand. I also heard they might check this...

Argentina marks record trade surplus at nearly $19 bln in Milei's first year as president

Even if we ignore big macs, we can find a lot of examples of crazy prices within basic products. Only beef is a bit cheaper, the rest is more expensive or similar price. On the other hand seeing a specialist is like 20 euros... Anyway, nothing new, that's why everyone is so calm.

Prices for all goods and services can now be shown in USD (or other foreign currencies) as from Friday

Thanks, I was not aware it is so easy to obtain usd. I heard of exorbitant taxes on domestic cc when spending abroad, so I guessed it's still similar as it was when I was buying them, painstakingly every month. Time will tell I guess.

Prices for all goods and services can now be shown in USD (or other foreign currencies) as from Friday

I'm missing the point why would anyone pay in usd, that cannot be freely bought. And how will be inflation measured, when sellers will higher prices in pesos to try to obtain more usd, which many people have no access to? My lizard brain cannot comprehend what this means and how will affect all...

    INDEC reveals Argentina's 2024 inflation rate: 117.8%

Economies don't turn on dime for the better, but they can easily turn on the dime for the worse. Which is exactly what happened by devaluation of peso in mid December 2023, when Milei added around 30% inflation to the existing. I don't say this was necessarily bad, but the fact is, that he...

    INDEC reveals Argentina's 2024 inflation rate: 117.8%

No, I read it now and I'm not impressed.

    INDEC reveals Argentina's 2024 inflation rate: 117.8%

Milei for sure doesn't deserve the blame, of course not. But also not praise, except for few good things he did. Right now I'm surrounded by the news how Milei lowered inflation comparing to 2023, but this at least should come with some asterisk, since he also greatly contributed to 211% in...

    INDEC reveals Argentina's 2024 inflation rate: 117.8%

And it's funny how Milei exploded the inflation in December 2023, then closed the pipe and started hoarding, and now when there isn't any place for prices to go up, everyone is clapping at success. Nothing has been done really, just more of the same, and worse.

    Disappointed with Food in Argentina

For most of people their background defines what they like. I generally like Argentinian food, being a simple guy with simple taste. Doesn't mean I didn't try some good stuff from all around the earth, but those don't define my taste. Now, my former colleague from Taiwan, he opened my eyes a...

IMF Publishes Grim Evaluation of Argentina’s $44 Billion Deal

I'm not sure if cepo would do that, but the value of peso is a burden for sure. Expats don't matter in this picture, Argentina is simply objectively too expensive on so many levels, that is unsustainable. There can't be no growth.

Food prices are amongst the highest of the planet

Lately it seems so, but when you take the salaries and some other expenses into consideration, the difference might not be as big, if any. If you have a set income in USA, Europe might be amazing place for you though. But then you would probably complain about prices of energy, plenty of laws...

Is the Milei "Transformation" Failing Already?

Resignation? Like what to do even, who to call? Cristina is well remembered, massa isn't even in consideration, things are too complicated for the crowd to demand something... In many countries streets would be burning on 20 of December already, not in Argentina. Instead people try to get by...

    WiFi repeater needed

If you can, you can just pull the cable on the other side and plug in normal router, if you have spare maybe. Mesh is of course better, but it ain't cheap.

Tough Times For Argentine Factories As Consumers Penny-pinch

Some things made in Argentina are awful, but some are of quality you will never find outside anymore. What these guys were making in the past borders to art sometimes. Some furniture, or doors are like new after 40 years of heavy use. But then your termotanque explodes after 2 years, and you are...

Argentina sees sharpest drop in beef consumption for 30 years

If Argentines should cut something, it should be sweet drinks. In my opinion overconsumption of meat is positive for their health, because they almost don't eat other carbohydrates. But lately I see a lot of obesity I didn't notice 10 years ago. A lot of Argentines also refuse to walk 100m...

Is the Milei "Transformation" Failing Already?

I had no expectations whatsoever, and have yet to see any effort to improve the economy. Yes, it was and still is a mess, but for any changes to happen you need to implement something. That something is missing, so why would economy improve in the distant future? Cutting everywhere has never...

Is the Milei "Transformation" Failing Already?

I guess it's pretty simple. Government prints allright, but it doesn't pass it to people. Instead, it's buying dolars from those people. So usd stagnate, there are still pesos going in, when mixed with outstanding Argentinian economy, you get high inflation despite lack of purchasing power. It's...
