    Argentina Versus Colombia to Retire

Regarding Bogata, I would actually rather be in a place that is cold versus one that is hot to be honest. If you're cold then you can always put on warm clothes. Having said that, I want to be in a place that has things to do, so it might not be a good fit for me if there isn't much to see...

That makes sense. I'm going to try to be flexible.

    Argentina Versus Colombia to Retire

Thanks this is helpful. I'm meeting with a Colombian immigration lawyer to discuss options for residency. I've been to Medellin and it was nice. The weather is perfect of course. I want to check out Bogata though. I feel like it's not as popular for expats which could be a good thing. It...

    Argentina Versus Colombia to Retire

I know there are a lot of subjective factors here, but I'm trying to research what would be a better fit for me to retire early to. Also, I'm not aware of a resource like this webpage for Colombia. Does anyone know one? I want to live in a large city with cultural things to do and a variety of...

What Would Dollarization Mean for Expats?

Why has rent gone up so much? I've been planning to pay 400-500 to live in BA, but now I'm hearing a lot higher numbers on this site.

Would you guys reconsider moving to Argentina if you're betting on the low cost of living given these potential changes?

Realistic to Move to Argentina and Live Off Investments?

Right, that's the purpose from the perspective of Argentina, what I mean is that from a US legal perspective I would lose the ability to change the allocation of my investments as only the trustee would have that authority. My investments are in ETFs, bonds and cash. Honestly, the possibility...

Realistic to Move to Argentina and Live Off Investments?

I don't think you pay capital gains tax for setting up an irrevocable trust in the US. It could trigger gift taxes, but the the amount you would have to gift would be very high to bump into that. i.e. 12m+

Realistic to Move to Argentina and Live Off Investments?

So, the drawback is that I would not be able to to manage the assets myself and I technically cannot withdraw the principal unless the trustee does so. Do you also have to pay the trustee? If it's workable to do as a revokable trust as you mentioned before that would be perfect

This sounds more appealing than the irrevocable option to me personally.

Realistic to Move to Argentina and Live Off Investments?

Thank you for your detailed reply steveinbsas! It's really helpful to hear about your circumstance. Thank you for your detailed reply. I'm familiar with the concept of revocable/irrevocable trusts. Based on my understanding, the drawback to putting your assets into an irrevocable trust is that...

Realistic to Move to Argentina and Live Off Investments?

It's hard to say for sure, but I would like the option to stay forever if possible. If I meet someone there and want to settle down, I don't want to be forced to leave.

Realistic to Move to Argentina and Live Off Investments?

I would be a resident by a temporary one. So, I would have a 1 year visa.

Realistic to Move to Argentina and Live Off Investments?

That's good advice thank you. I agree that the immigration lawyer has an interest to downplay any tax issues in order to convince me to move to work with him in order to move to Argentina. He made it sound almost easy to avoid having tax residency as long as I didn't get permanent residency and...

That's true. I'll get social security as well eventually assuming it's still around by then.

Realistic to Move to Argentina and Live Off Investments?

Don't be led off track by options like permatourism. Thanks for your post. This is pretty much the process I'm working my way through right now. I actually met with an immigration lawyer this afternoon who seemed quite good, but was a bit pricey. It sounds like there may be a way for me to...

    Immigration Lawyer in 2023

I was wondering if you would be willing to pass along the name of the immigration attorney that you recommend? I reached out to Celano already, but would like to see what other options are out there.
