Agreed. One caveat is that even US immigration lawyers vary in competence. Generally you get what you pay for.

    Shift To The Right

Article by James Petras covers all of South America but he seems to treat Argentina as an important example. http://www.unz.com/jpetras/latin-america-the-pendulum-swings-to-the-right/

    It's Too Expensive Here!

I posted this tongue-in-cheek -- not because conditions are good in the USA but because no-one wants the US down and out. At the same time it's true that there's been a slow but steady efflux of high net worth individuals from the USA -- because of its global taxation policy. And the realities...

    Re: British Passport Renewal ?

A mortgage at five times a working couple's joint income -- though this probably won't cover it either. Good article by Meek in the LRB: http://www.lrb.co.uk/v36/n01/james-meek/where-will-we-live Working class is buggered. Correction -- was buggered decades ago. Now the (so-called) middle...

    Re: British Passport Renewal ?

Neither can I. I've been out for 18 years. My sister-in-law recently bought a terraced house in West London for 450,000 pounds. It's exorbitant. Outside the Southeast you can buy houses somewhat cheaper -- but still in the stratosphere. And Britain outside London and the home counties is mired...

    Re: British Passport Renewal ?

Application has to go to England -- part of Cameron & Co's austerity and cost-cutting measures. This only came into play from about August of last year (2013). And the price for renewing one's passport is way too high. Is this what we fought WW2 for?

    Devastating.

Didn't say you did. It's the mendacious Economist article that is chockful of lies, distortions, and half-truths.

    Devastating.

Matias is correct. The structural situation of Argentina changed about a century back. The very economic model -- agro exports -- that allowed Argentina to become a rich country (by the standards of the day) stopped working because of the new configuration of global trade, and the country has...

Obama's Choice For Arg Ambassador.....$ Buys The Post?

Yes, that's a key difference. Or to put it differently, GWB was always threatening to break into a smirk at the bull he was spouting, causing his minders no end of anxiety. Obama can maintain a straight and sombre face (aka "looking presidential").

Obama's Choice For Arg Ambassador.....$ Buys The Post?

I'm digressing again but though I agree with you in theory, the Nazi theorist Carl Schmitt perceptively pointed out that might makes right, that the rules the most powerful set up for others are not the ones they follow themselves. So the US can call Milosevic a war criminal and make the charge...

This gets mistranslated as "let them eat cake." presumably because there's nothing like brioche in England.

It's not the way the world works. You have a choice between a cultivated apparatchik and an uncouth one. That's as far as the choice goes. Someone who is not a criminal and war-monger won't last long, will get sacked or, er, eliminated.

Don't know if anyone here has seen the 1972 movie, Hammersmith Is Out. The following is worth watching from about the 11:00 mark onwards and shows how the system works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Xl4VwrszXs

Obama's Choice For Arg Ambassador.....$ Buys The Post?

This is going off on a tangent. This applies equally to just about all the European countries as well. I thought we're talking of the calibre of the people, not that they were criminals, warmongers, and mass murderers. That goes without saying. The history of Europe and North America is drenched...
