Argentina Tops List Of 20 Signs Of Global Economic Meltdown

Hehe, doesn't work like that. The trick is to convert those hot-potato dollars into something of more enduring worth (land, precious metals, maybe some other currency).

Argentina Tops List Of 20 Signs Of Global Economic Meltdown

It does that, sure. But it also prints money to fund its own fiscal shortfalls to the tune of roughly $85bn a month -- and is forced to do so because of insufficient tax receipts. This is what's making the markets jittery and my guess is at some point there will be a mad stampede for the exit...

Argentina Tops List Of 20 Signs Of Global Economic Meltdown

The article is scaremongering but the Brazilian economy is a big one and secondly, the "domino effect" can cause cascading collapses, particularly with a fragile global economic system. There's no "recovery" in either Europe or the USA, by the way -- nor prospects for one.

Will the Falklands debacle soon be repeated?

Because China isn't Argentina. There was supposed to be a two-year consultation process in the early '80s between the Chinese and the British. The Brits did nothing so after a year the Chinese came and said, "Well, a year has gone and nothing has occurred on the diplomatic front. So we expect...

    Wendy's is back...

The good thing about Wendy's is that they use fresh meat rather than frozen meat (unlike BK and McDs). Also their fries are better (not reconstituted like McDs) and usually seasoned with sea salt. But in Argentina there is no excuse to be eating at any of these American fast food places.

    Young Europeans flock to Argentina

I did issue the caveat, "for what it's worth." Even so I feel compelled to point out that while Germany may be "doing well," it is German capital that is doing well, not necessarily the workforce. In particular, young Germans have a hard time finding jobs. I myself have encountered some in...

    Young Europeans flock to Argentina

A recent article in the Daily Mail (for what it's worth) on emigration from Europe.

    Young Europeans flock to Argentina

There has been a news story or two about young Portuguese emigrating to Brazil and Angola. But these have been young university-educated professionals (architects, civil engineers, etc.) who've managed to find a niche for themselves. Southern Europe (Spain, Portugal, Greece) is in dire straits...

Will the Falklands debacle soon be repeated?

But, but, but --- (sputtering up my coffee) -- that would mean the end of the British empire. It would mean the end of croquet on the lawn, afternoon tea under the shade of some tree, and lording it over the natives. Just won't wash, old boy. Can't let the side down. White man's burden and all...

Will the Falklands debacle soon be repeated?

They're still putting some money into aircraft carriers if this wiki article is any good: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_Elizabeth_class_aircraft_carrier But I agree that Britain is a toothless old dog which can now only bark. The days of Palmerston and gunboat diplomacy are long over for...

Argentina launches naval campaign to isolate Falkland Islands

There's rumor of oil around the islands. Otherwise no-one gives a rat's a$$ about the islands per se. It's an albatross around the neck of a country in precipitous decline. The little fracas back in '82 was because the Argentinian generals were trying to divert their people's attention away from...

Argentina launches naval campaign to isolate Falkland Islands

A toothless and decrepit old power like Britain cannot keep an island 7,000 miles away indefinitely. It will revert sooner or later to Argentina. I doubt Britain can even afford another armed engagement. The Argentinians just have to be patient while Britain continues to implode.

    UK riots

Please don't get emotional on me: it serves no purpose. And don't disingenuously ascribe a position to me I never said I hold. I didn't say "a black thing." I never said others were not involved. The rub lies in presenting the figures. The media-concocted reality is shying away from facts and...

    UK riots

Look: Was there a riot in Romford? Or just one place that got broken into? Was it really of the same order of magnitude as Tottenham, Brixton, Clapham, and Ealing? Be honest. And why no riots in Grays, Tilbury, Basildon, or Harlow? After all, all these are deprived areas. Be honest: Without...

    UK riots

Euphemisms are used -- which everyone in polite society knows how to decode. Allusion and circumlocution have become the rule in discourse. It's a far cry from the '60s, when Peter Griffiths -- a Conservative candidate for the Smethwick seat in '64 -- had as his slogan, "If you want a n****r for...

    UK riots

Not really. Places like Romford and Dagenham technically come in Essex but are really part of East London. I'm not denying that white chavs were involved -- but is anyone here seriously saying said chavs would have engaged in looting but for what the Afro-Caribbeans started? It seems also...

    UK riots

The dynamic and momentum is coming from Afro-Caribbean groups. They have been joined by some (white) chav gangs -- opportunistic thieves. But take the Afro-Caribbeans out of the picture and the underclass whites will slink back into the shadows. And for chrissake, post better sources than the...

    S&P credit downgrade of US

It would appear that S&P downgraded US creditworthiness from AAA to AA+. Where will the downward spiral stop? When American debt is at or near junk bond status? As conditions continue to deteriorate, are we going to see an exodus of hungry and desperate Americans? The future does not bode well.

My letter to the New York Times

Look at your post (#11), where you cite my post on the NYT buying into the WMD story. I am consistently talking about that. You are moving to other areas -- your post on NYT questioning of the hawkish stance doesn't address the WMD point. Unless you address this, I'm bowing out of this...
