    Expat meetup Wednesday 31st of March 8pm at Wherever Bar

    Hey, it was a great night - I enjoyed meeting everyone, and Truls thanks for organising it! I was a little slow today and the neurons weren't quite functioning - but it was worth if for the good night. Looking forward to asado on Friday now :-)

    The route from perma-tourist to legal.

    Hey mini - thanks for setting me (and others) straight about waiting 3 years with the temporaria before applying for a DNI - I guess I wasn't well enough informed since my process went kaput before that. So I didn't experience it, just thought it was the go. OK, my problems re: my denial and...

    The route from perma-tourist to legal.

    esllou - I must concur with ElQueso - this sounds like an easy straighforward process - but it's not. I recommend getting a lawyer. I know some people have said it's not worth it (and I just wish I had their knowledge and luck) but I didn't. I did it myself - thought I had everything ok, got...

    The route from perma-tourist to legal.

    Oops I forgot to say..what is probably the obvious...you have to produce your passport also, with every page photocopied...this is becasue it's really important that you maintain your perma - tourist 90 day renewal update. So if you're thinking about applying for temporary residence, make sure...

    The route from perma-tourist to legal.

    Well esllou, it's not easy, but these are your options 1) residency through a work visa (you need a sponsor- very difficult to get) 2) Retirement - don't think you qualify 3) Rentista is when you are not retired but can show that you receive and transfer (US$ 700 or $750 can't remember which)...

    Taxi rip offs

    Hey ElQueso, I'm a long timer expat here in Bs As, so I'm pretty ok with a lot of issues here - BUT - I just wanted to say - your replies are always so helpful, and well thought out for new comers. Rarely critical and full of good info. Thanks!!!!!

    suitcases to the US

    I'm a teacher and I left my home country 20 years ago - been living in Europe, mostly Asia and now Sth America for 3 years - and I never change countries with more than 2 cases - what is so important that you can't take in 2 cases? You need to prioritise or pay the high cost of shipment from Bs...

    Basmati or Jasmine rice

    Napolean hit it on the head. I always buy basmati rice and spices in barrio chino - excellent selection! I lived in India for many years, so I love good rice and spices and from my experience here - China town is the best.............it's expensive, but it's worth it!

    Expats meet up this Friday night

    Conifer, thanks for your recommendations, they are good - so, would be good if you start a thread for a night out at one of those places in the future. But Howard started a great thread, generously offering to make plans - so I will come, as I hope others will. If it's too expensive for some...

    Ok Buenos Aires here we come...

    Thanks SaraSara and Pericles for your honest posts - I have lived here for 3+ years now - and I totally agree with you re: rising costs etc. I just never post it, as I see all the negative feedback it gets. I earn pesos (and lived off savings until now - all gone) and now it's impossible to live...

    Why are we losing our hair?

    Hey totally agree you shouldn't wash your face or your hair everyday. It's difficult in BA when you take many colectivos and subtes each day as I do - but i splash water on my face, and try to wash my hair every 2nd or 3rd day. But tell me why you should blow-dry quickly? (not doubting you at...

    Ouch!!!

    I used the Buenos Aires dental school. It's on Marcelo T de Alvear (between Uriburu and Azcuenaga I think) It's a huge building saying Faultad de Odontologia and Guardia 24 hours. (Right next to the Facultad de Medicina) I had to wait a long time, but they did the work and it was fine. Of course...

    Beware Robbery Attempts at Galleria Pacifico

    I'm not a newbie. I've lived in Bs As for more than 3 years. I'm a teacher so I travel all over the city every day - probably 4 or more colectivos and subtes each day. And really, not a week passes that I don't have someone try to rob me - or I see another robbery - it's terrible. I haven't...

    Planning a Mendoza trip

    I've been to Mendoza for small holidays a few times - and both of the posts above are great and include the highlights. I loved the cycling tour of the vineyards. But another time I took a 1/2 day bus trip to some vineyards, artesenal chocolate makers, olive groves with amazing fresh olive oil...

    Mendoza - Salta

    I did this journey at Easter 3 years ago - it was great. I took the bus to Salta (long trip) but my bus was good. Visited Jujuy for a few days. Then bused to La Rioja (the mountains are beautiful) Lots to see in Jujuy. Then bused to San Juan and went to Valle de la Luna. Then bused to mendoza...

    Chai tea?

    I'm confused!!!!! I love chai tea. I lived in India for many years and lived on it. Then when I lived in China, I could still get it! Is chai tea different in other countries???? Cause starbucks is the last place I would consider it. Maybe I'm thinking about something else, cause commercialised...

    private English students

    I have a couple of students on my waiting list. They have contacted me several times, but I just don't have space in my schedule to teach them right now. But they are keen to start. If any teachers are interested, send me a PM and I will send on their details for you to contact them and start...

    private English students

    I charge $45 per hour for classes in companies, $40 for private classes in my home and theirs for international exam preparation (IELTS, TOEFL, FCE etc) and $35 for conversation classes. Institutes are now paying staff $30 - $35 per hour for teachers - so students at institutes are being charged...

    Hi all, considering moving from Australia.

    Hi to the original poster from Aus I'm an expat here, been here for 3+ years - it's good and bad for me. But I'm so sorry for what you have had to read. If I was considering moving from Oz to Bs As, I would be totally put off by this 'diatribe' on this thread. These are supposed to be comrades...
