8.9 Quake & Tsunami in JApan.

In fairness we should not hold Perry to a higher standard of reporting than other notable baexpats. He has to compete for space and attention with baexpats who in these very pages solve the world's economic problems, predict inflation rates months ahead, and provide detailed in-depth political...

8.9 Quake & Tsunami in JApan.

My family is visiting Northern Honshu and Tokyo now, and they have survived, they are going to sleep outside tonight in a car. But we don't know about relatives who live in Sendai City. Yes, the buildings and social organization of Japan have changed so much over the last 50 years to withstand...

8.9 Quake & Tsunami in JApan.

Having been through several magnitude 7's, a long-lasting 8.9 in a coastal area is unimaginable.

Soldiers who should face a firing squad before they die of natural causes

Well put. We are all aware that there is a form of news-entertainment programming that is used in broadcasting, where two or three people are brought in to provide disagreeing opinions about a topic in the news. We have become used to this disconnected claiming and combative position...

What do you all cook down here?

I have been thinking about how to get together with other Palermo residents once in a while to cook and eat a more interesting meal than I would usually cook for myself since I moved here a few months ago. If there are a bunch of people who would be interested in getting together to cook...

    En Negro

Why not a little balance? The side walks and gutters are cleaned regularly by street sweepers, and the garbage picked up nightly. The recycling is not as neat as some countries, but it happens to all the garbage, not just the stuff that people choose to separate themselves.

    En Negro

Silicon Valley is outsourcing to India and China whenever and as fast as it can to cut labor costs. CA is bankrupt. Benefits are not great. Real pay after tax has been falling for over a decade. How about a better example of a sustainable and structurally more comparable work culture to...

Best US Debit Card (Not credit Card) to use in Buenos Aires?

Schwab is exceptional. Another example of this, Schwab 24x7 answers the support phone w/ a US rep speaking English. The rest of US Banks, e.g. Citi, I get a call center somewhere in Asia some EST hours reading from a call center script that does not cover my situation.

Best US Debit Card (Not credit Card) to use in Buenos Aires?

If you are not a US-citizen, then the Schwab checking account needs a paper form with signature to open the checking account. Online signature only works for US-citizens.

Odd how the US media is barely covering this story...

Surely we all do know this and the odd thing about this is that we still suspend disbelief so readily, as if we wish our viewing of governments to be as illusory as watching movies. Wishing, wishing, ...

    Lies and Deception

Cathy, there are many Argentine expats who worked in the US for a several years then returned home and others who did not return yet. They have interesting informed views to consider in the research phase.

    A sign of the times

These are historically unrelated. Domestic living standards are primarily the result of the creation of real wealth and value through domestic agriculture and engineering. Being responsible for running the most popular reserve currency the planet has ever seen cannot be as much fun as its...

    Camping Gear

There is a Deportcamping store at Santa Fe 4830, that has an upstairs clearance section with prices well below the regular stuff. Can't remember if they have sleeping bags up there, but there are tents and backpacks. Its a couple of blocks from subte D Palermo station

Visa advice: I want my Argentine friend to come visit me in the USA!

Try to get the expert training mentioned by bajo_cero2. The questions asked by immigration officers have ulterior motives that it is not possible to guess using common sense, goodwill and honesty. Combine this with the cultural assumptions behind questions, and your have a recipe for...
