Argentina Takes Steps to Dollarize and Holds Key Rate

    > why do stores add to the price if you use a (US) credit or debit card I believe it's the other way around where you often get a 10-15% discount if you pay cash. Maybe the prices you see listed are cash prices, leading to a surprise premium when paying with plastic. I've had instances where...

Argentina Takes Steps to Dollarize and Holds Key Rate

I’ve heard dollarizarion isn’t really feasible given the reserves required in pesos. But I’m not an economist so if anyone is please fill me in.

Can confirm that the ones with the purple screens (very subtle difference in look) work, with iPhone Apple Pay Mastercard Debit in my case.

Where do you go to hear music in English?

    > And if you've never paid attention to that, the question becomes, what are your favorite places to hear music in BA and why? I frequent many jazz and rock bars, such as the Strummer Bar, Salon Pueyreddon, Virasoro and Borges. But there's too many to name really. Strummer is my favorite...

You mean English language music? I go to many places for music but don't really care what language the lyrics are in (if any)

Face biometrics mandated for SIM card activation in Argentina

Nomad works for me. But you have to follow the in-app instructions carefully to get the eSIM activated and assigned as your primary line for data.

    How to find events?

Would echo the suggestion to follow, on Instagram, the venues that match your interest in music or whichever kind of cultural event you're looking for. Instagram has taken over here, websites aren't maintained by the venues as much. If you share what type of stuff has your interest, others can...

You can now pay for Subte with cards and mobile phones

Ah, no definitely not. While the article states they added the new entrances all over town, which didn’t seem likely

You can now pay for Subte with cards and mobile phones

From this article: > You can now pay your fare on the Buenos Aires Subte (subway) with contactless credit and debit cards, as well as digital wallets like Google Pay, Apple Pay, and local wallets such as MODO. and > Look out for the purple screens on the turnstiles that are compatible with...

Face biometrics mandated for SIM card activation in Argentina

Better to get a domestic SIM as fees across borders can accumulate and yield large phone bills. An eSIM is easily purchased via apps such as Nomad, Airalo. Physical SIMs are purchased at for example a Claro branch, bring your passport and a plastic credit card.

    On life as an expat

    > Anyone with money can live abroad. It’s a sort of an extended holiday. The true test of an expatriate is holding down a job, learning a language, paying taxes, passing a local driving test, negotiating the culture, truckling to unbudgeable authority and now and then enduring the gibes of...

    Allergies Anyone?

Funny… had the same symptoms for a few weeks and they have now passed. Figured it was just me. Not aware of any allergies ever.

Face biometrics mandated for SIM card activation in Argentina

My understanding of this article is that the carriers are asked to require biometric authentication of who's using the phone through face recognition, at the time of activating a SIM. On iPhone, this could be implemented if the operating system did a quick FaceID check before allowing a SIM to...

You can now pay for Subte with cards and mobile phones

Weird, maybe they found Apple Pay too hard / expensive to implement. Apparently you can top up a physical SUBE card using your iPhone.

You can now pay for Subte with cards and mobile phones

FWIW I tried all my cards (using iPhone / Apple Pay) at one of the subway gates the other day and none worked. Maybe they mean they'll let you pay at ticket machines with cards? In many countries in Europe you can just enter by swiping your credit card at the gates.

    Disappointed with Food in Argentina

On average I find the food here terrible as well. It’s all some form or another of meats, bread, sugar and cheese. Asian kitchens, particularly comida por peso (take out buffets) are where I go to get my vegetable dominated meals. I’m not a vegetarian per se, I just need more than meats, carbs...

    Buenos Aires local news

Anyone reading any sources of news specifically to Buenos Aires, as opposed to national / political news? I’m interested in what goes on in the city itself. All the way down to a busted hydrant or a missing cat. Spanish is fine as I realize English sites focus on the bigger issues.

Dealing with kids asking for money repeatedly after being helped

Okay... and that was sufficient evidence to tell everyone not to give anything either, to anyone? Guess I was hoping for somewhat more profound insights.
