It's an Expat Thing: Unsolved Mysteries

Ok, here's two more questions: Why do some taxi drivers drive at night with their dims on or no lights at all? Where do the Palermo Park carriage drivers take their horses at the end of the day? They clip clop down Thames every night at dusk.

It's an Expat Thing: Unsolved Mysteries

I noticed that thing about walking too ... thought perhaps in South America one doesn't walk as a pedestrian, to the right, but to the left? Am I not yielding in the right direction? Noticed this mode of walking in Australia, where they drive on the left and one walks to the left, but why in...

It's an Expat Thing: Unsolved Mysteries

Why do taxis move faster than ambulances? Why do restaurants display old typewriters for ambience? Why is Peter Capusotto so damn funny when I don't even understand a word? Why can't I stop drinking malbec? Who takes the cat dishes from my front porch every night? When do Portenos...

    Chile Devastated

FYI, one of our BA Expat members was (and still is) in Chile during the quake. IrishVan sent me a brief email saying she was OK but the situation was very difficult.

There is something I don't get...

"Just a root canal in the us cost about 1k." My last root canal was $2,000. Dentists clean up in the U.S. And I don't agree with Rob in Baires about Americans never talking about the dark side of their country. He hasn't talked to enough Americans.

Need a Place to Crash: What's the Best Alternative?

The hostel's name is Santa Teresita. My friend says she thinks it's full, but it doesn't hurt to call, find out for sure, and get on a wait list. There's a health club with a pool across the street, a real plus in the Microcenter.

    Vietnamese Pho?

Pho, yummmm. Best thing on the planet for a cold or a cold day, or any day! Minneapolis has great Vietnamese food because of our Vietnamese population, so I know good Vietnamese. Haven't even tried to find any here, so thanks for the heads up on quality. I have heard good things about Green...

    Nearly Pickpocketed on the Bus

I don't know if they're available here, but my travel wallet has steel in the straps so it can't be cut off your body.

    Nearly Pickpocketed on the Bus

There's a difference between a tourist and an expat ... tourists aren't here long enough to buy a new wardrobe. They bring what they have from home.

    Nearly Pickpocketed on the Bus

A note to the women: try tying your purse zipper shut to your purse strap. The extra bit of fumbling necessary to deal with the tie (I use a shoelace) can alert you to the theft in process.

Need a Place to Crash: What's the Best Alternative?

I have a friend who lives in a nice hostel in the Microcenter. She really likes it ... let me contact her and get back to you.

What do you like best about being here?

    1. The climate is opposite mine ... a whole year of sunshine! 2. Portenos are friendly and helpful people. 3. I can actually afford dental and medical care in BA (and it's high quality) ... something I can't in the U.S. 4. Kinoto el whiskey ice cream 5. Malbec rose wine at a price that's...

    Brutally Beaten in Recoleta

    Brutally Beaten in Recoleta

I have seriously considered leaving this city. I don't understand the attitude of just roll over and take it ... defending yourself is not "attacking." Trying to ascertain whether someone is going to do you serious harm is something we all have to do to survive in a crime situation. I think...
