Why are there so much earthquakes lately

From USGS: Are Earthquakes Really on the Increase? We continue to be asked by many people throughout the world if earthquakes are on the increase. Although it may seem that we are having more earthquakes, earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or greater have remained fairly constant. A...

Why are there so much earthquakes lately

Pericles, you of course neglected to cut and paste this footnote at the bottom of the article: (well actually you did cut and paste it, I saw it a second ago then obviously when you realised that it didn't serve your argument you removed it) which leads to an article explaining how that graph...

    US Aid to Haiti

The quote is there. Sergio questioned whether France should be doing more as it colonised Haiti, I agree but was merely demonstrating that there was a more recent colonial relationship than that with the French, certainly there are other aspects to the relationship but I was focusing on some of...

    US Aid to Haiti

The French owe Haiti plenty but you did start this thread to focus on US efforts in Haiti so lets stay with that topic for the moment. The US actually took longer then France to recognise the independence of Haiti, maintaining an economic embargo over the country for the first 60 years of...

    US Aid to Haiti

Well, not quite, you missed a few steps in the process. Clinton restored democracy by reinstating Aristides in 1994 after he was deposed in a coup but only on the condition that he adopt the kind of neoliberal program favoured by his opponent, a former World Bank official who lost the election...

    US Aid to Haiti

I can't believe the very harsh anti Ghanaian streak on these forums. The government of Ghana donated 0.0186 % of their GDP to help in the Haitian relief effort, more than 10 times the miserable contribution of the US and nobody on this forum has come out and praised them. I also find in private...

    US Aid to Haiti

OK, let's just get it over with, OK, you win America, you win again, here have this gold medal, cue the anthem, in your face rest of the world, you killed them again, left them all for dead, U S A ! U S A ! U S A ! Erm, is nobody else donating? One would expect the US to be one of the better...

    Brutally Beaten in Recoleta

That's actually oft repeated but completely untrue. Levels of property crime and violent crime were higher during the fabulous nineties but I think everyone was too busy shopping to worry about it. Honestly, some of the fear, loathing and misinformation I've read on this thread and others...

ARG ranks 49 in Human Development Index

Seasonal Affective Disorder is certainly an influence but Norway's numbers aren't that bad (neither were Sweden's even during its peak years in the 70's) - there are numerous countries above it and several that have suicide rates more than twice as high (Russia, Lithuania, Belarus, Slovenia...

ARG ranks 49 in Human Development Index

I was actually referring to the suicide rate, Uruguay has consistently been among the very highest in Latin America, but maybe the two are related.

ARG ranks 49 in Human Development Index

The Norway thing is something of a myth. They have never to my knowledge had one of the highest suicide rates in the world. Sweden did have quite high rates in the 70's (ABBA?) but they have declined significantly since, maybe the misconception came from those days and just stuck for Scandinavia...
