    Imports or lack of..

Then colour me yanqui. I speak with an American accent, but deploy plenty of malapropisms and commit untold atrocities upon punctuation.

Yeah, when you spook your closest regional trading partners, even though they broadly agree with your overall trade policy and practice it themselves in broad outlines, you know you're doing something wrong.

Ligaments are connections, in a general sense. Fabe nailed it: what I meant was something like "tentacles". It may not be particularly idiomatic, but I don't think it's incorrect. As to my choice to use the word "violence", I think you've made a mountain out of a molehill. It was...

I've been in the US for about 20 years; I don't have an excuse. :-)

I'm not sure what you're getting at. No, I don't think anyone's deliberately harming my family. I just think that most Americans don't realise that imports of foreign drugs commonly taken for granted abroad are virtually nonexistent here, and that while the shelves are full, they are full of...

    Imports or lack of..

To be fair, medication is one area where the US substantially protects its domestic Big Pharma and foreign players with whom it is in bed. The importation of medicines sold in Europe, which often have much milder side effects and are, in all kinds of respects, gentler on the physiology, is...

Well, so much for Mercosur. One of the things it was set up to most explicitly promote was the elimination of non-tariff restrictions on the transit of goods, or any other measures with similar net effect.

    Who needs more cowbell?

Palermo doesn't have a whole lot of concerts that feature the cowbell, so I believe you would be doing Bruce Dickenson a disservice if you didn't attend the hell out of this.

It sounds to me like continually lionising Néstor is integral to the maintenance of her power.

Yeah, I know. But there are larger quality-of-life questions to be raised about a society in which commonplace things taken for granted elsewhere must be personally imported, because they are sparsely available and massively (not just a little bit) more expensive, solely on account of trade...

If you or anyone else can provide more details on the exact terms of the import restrictions and what they cover, I'd be very curious.

That's my plan as well. Come for 3-6 months and see to what extent I am fooling myself about being able to stand it. Like you, I really want it to work out and try to not let my heart sink from the more jaded rants around here.

Unfortunately, a failure to grasp basic economics, in the quest for a populist "job creation" objective, is a ubiquitous pathology across Latin America and elsewhere. Nothing you can do but wait for the inevitable protests against ink cartridge shortages and whatnot.

Brilliant. Was her presumption that there exists a perfectly, or even remotely substitutable domestic industry to produce those things? Does the government understand what Argentina's economic base is actually capable of producing? Competitive advantage? Especially in an irrevocably...

    VoIP or telecom questions?

Hmm, the thread seems to be visible again. As I answered to you in a PM, the fundamental answer is: yes. At least, under ideal conditions.

Skype: Does any one have the following package?

Also, if you have a smartphone, the Skype app on the iPhone and on Android works quite well. If you are using some other, SIP-based VoIP service, the Bria softphone from Counterpath is a great app. It's primarily what I used when I was in BA.

Thanks for the good advice. At what stage in the process can you ask them to wrap something for you at the airport? Sorry for the dumb question; I've never done it before.
