    Moving to Argentina

Many thanks for this: shell = my usage = off the shelf company in some english parlance I think. My friend is Irish and has worked for a company for 2-3 years and told me that getting perm residency was not a problem in her (big) company as their company lawyers handle it all. She no doubt had a...

    Moving to Argentina

I am opening up another line of enquiry but since you people seem to be very knowledgeable I hope its ok to post it here: in talking about moving, residence etc, I know that if you are employed by a company here then they often spin the wheels to get you perm residence within a reasonable time...

    Macri's hilarious speech

The limits of the Government's aspiration appears to be merely a gentler decline in the value of the peso while at the same time asserting it is going to toughen policy to achieve zero inflation - since imports will continue and will embody price rises (as them value of peso sinks), further...

Are you supposed to tip in hotels?

This must be a matter of opinion rather than a moral imperative? When the Spanish Civil War broke out and republicanism swept Madrid, the waiters and porters made a principle of refusing tips as enforcing a culture of traditional deference and servility. The French make an enormous point of...

    Moving to Argentina

I know one guy who stayed a couple of weeks with a BnB and then bargained a long term stay at 'hostel prices' (I don't believe him but he did get the landlord to give him a low rent). In your situation a sensible option is to rent a room in a house not an apartment IMO.

Are you supposed to tip in hotels?

My experience is that Argentinians almost always warmly appreciate a gratuity of say 5% or 10%. If the service has been poor I don't tip or for a coffee served from a counter or nearby, again usually do not. Cannot get the American custom of compulsory tipping of 15%-20%. I once paid a group...

Peso what level do you see it this year ?

See comments of Rich One above re leverage. The law will enforce a proper contract, not make your boss give you one.

    Conversation coach

I am interested in progressing my basic (I mean basic) Spanish with some one-to-one conversation classes with a professional (ie good standard), reliable and honest person who has some experience in this kind of work, preferably not a teenager. If anyone can recommend someone for (sa) 4 hours...

Show us your money. Renting in BA: what's the go?

Check out BnB for prices. USD$ budget of 1500-2000 fine if you want to live reasonably well but it will not cover extravagances such as trips, private tours, private tango lessons and shows. Depends on how rich your lifestyle is and what you are used to. Some foods are really not very cheap if...

When will property be cheap in Buenos Aires?

Yes we were talking about two different people: one tango aficionado here who has bought and spends 3 months per year here and another (my friend) who is renting and spends 12 months a year here - both tangueros. I assumed (wrongly) we were talking about full year rentals.

When will property be cheap in Buenos Aires?

    Is 30 months 10 years or 2.5 years? I make $600 x 12 x 10 = USD$72,000?

When will property be cheap in Buenos Aires?

ps I should have underlined perhaps that $450-500 US per month is nowhere near the top of any market: just checked somewhere in Recoleta which looked good: Barrio Recoleta Tamaño 1 DOR - 1 Baño (68 m²) Cant. de Personas 2 Características LOFT - Internet Wi-Fi - Jacuzzi - Balcón - TV LCD -...

When will property be cheap in Buenos Aires?

Not sure of your point here: you say 'you perhaps stand to lose more than that'? Perhaps. Perhaps not. Given the reluctance of so many people to sell at any loss even in these conditions, evidence suggests that people prefer to hang on to their headaches rather than embrace the headaches of...

    Frustration over the economy

------------- Fair point though IMF loan to UK 'worked' for one model (labour-social democrat) for a while, and then the Thatcher conservatives scrapped that model and turned to monetarism, mass unemployment and anti-labour legislation which "worked" to make them the most unpopular government in...

When will property be cheap in Buenos Aires?

Sage advice here though the interesting point is that rentals (in my experience) show little sign of downward movement as USD$ strengthens against the ARG Peso - rather the reverse - so renters can make a lot of money. My tango friend tells me he pays more than USD$100 a week to rent a place in...
