Legal Risks of Irregular Immigration Status

From before we had a far right president in power. To add context, in a meeting of an NGO where I volunteer, we were discussing the legal ramifications that homeless / disadvantaged people could face if they were detained or suspected of having committed a crime. If one is "irregular", their...

Legal Risks of Irregular Immigration Status

I wanted to share something that came up during a casual conversation with a friend of mine who’s an attorney, working directly for Migraciones. According to my friend, if someone is living in Argentina with an irregular status (for example, overstaying a tourist visa) and ends up detained or...

    Miracle in Microcenter

To sum it all up: Buenos Aires is what you choose to see. I’ve been here nearly 20 years. First came the honeymoon — everything felt magical. Then the reality check. Then something more real. A mix. Good and bad. Beauty and chaos. But mostly, a lot of heart. I’ve got in-laws who’d give you the...

    Miracle in Microcenter

Of course these stories exist. We live in a city. The 15th largest metropolitan area in the world. Experiencing major socioeconomic disparity. I think it's important to focus on the positive. Have you had any positive experiences?

    Miracle in Microcenter

What's your point? So does the housekeeper, the plumber, the portero, the electrician, and the Uber driver. Oh and any taxi driver who takes you home.

    Miracle in Microcenter

Thank you for sharing this. It is beautiful. And it embodies the true spirit of 90% of Porteños. I hear more stories like these, than negative stories. I hear more about wallets being returned than wallets being stolen. People rushing to pick you up when you fall, not pushing you down. Let's be...

    Private medical services

I was referring to private practices, correct. Even there, they are relatively conservative compared to the US. At public hospitals in Argentina, there is much greater hesitancy to prescribe anything unnecessary.

    Private medical services

Is this a universal question or specific to Argentina? In my experience and from what I've seen from friends and family, private doctors in Buenos Aires are more conservative and less profit driven compared to those in the United States.

A coffee for $3.50: Argentina is the most expensive country in Latin America

For fun, I've been tracking the per kilo price of Asado in USD for the past few years. I believe I've shared it with this group before, but it's been a while and today I updated it. Methodology: Always use the same link from Coto Digital for "Asado Del Medio Estancias Coto X KG" Always use...

How to cash a US Check?

Not an option here anymore - legally at least. It was possible in the basement of American Express headquarters at Plaza San Martin, 15 years ago. Some cuevas may cash a check, but for a fee and for clients with whom they have longstanding relationships.

    ATM withdrawals and AFIP

So now that we've once again reached the point where the brecha between blue and official is almost zero, I have a question for this group. Hypothetically if a permanent resident were to be "off the books", e.g. manejando solo con efectivo, and suddenly started using a foreign debit card for ATM...

Tourist visa expiring while doing residency visa

This is likely technically true and smart advice. In reality, I don't believe you would need to start the entire process over. I remember being in a similar situation and asked at an immigration office visit what would happen if I were to be outside the country on an expired precaria. The...

Foreign credit cards purchases at MEP rate

Amex is very slow, but it comes through (in my experience). Not my card of choice in BA. Much prefer visa or mastercard, where the discount occurs in realtime.

Sending US dollars from Argentina to USA

This is a great point. No personal need at the time of writing, but in the future, if there is any DMing happening, please include me. It makes sense to use this group and save on the high fees. I would vet people based on how long they have been members and whether they are active posters /...

Tourist visa expiring while doing residency visa

I've been in your exact situation and it's all good. Nothing to worry about. Once you have your precaria, traveling will be easier. But if you had to come and go between now and then you should be fine - with just some explanations and copies of the paperwork you have done so far with migraciones.

    Tourist visa extension denied

Thank you Bajo_cero2 I knew you’d have the answers. Aligned with what I thought - likely reinforced from having read your comments in the past. In my case I never renewed my tourist visa at DNM. The subject came up when my precaria was expiring or while I was still waiting for a precaria. Don’t...
