As far as I know you don’t need to wait for an appointment in the US. You can do everything in Italy.

Europe is fabulous. Free medical and free education including college. If you are in need, you can get child benefit from the government. Can get free housing. No wonder many Italian Americans trying to get Italian passport through their grandparents like they do in Argentina :-)
