    A Grim Anniversary

Ten years ago -- December 20, 2001 -- the Argentine economic crisis reached its worst moment. How are people remembering the events from that date, or choosing to commemorate them? I'm not in Argentina currently but following the news online, and while there's enough uncertainty to worry about...

Join me to watch the World Series tonight?

Right. And the next time some Brit or Aussie starts a thread about watching the Ashes in BA, I'm going to chime in and ask, "How the hell can you enjoy a sport like cricket when it takes six f#%king hours to play??!?!??!!?!?????" Just a question, nothing more, right?

    Visiting from Florida

Ahem... Museo Historico Nacional (Parque Lezama facing Defensa) Museo de Arte Moderno (Av San Juan 350) Museo Penitenciario (Humberto Primo 378 -- an old convent later turned into a women's prison) Zanjon de Granados (Defensa 755 -- awesome architectural site underneath the modern-day San...

    tango, foreigners and discrimination

For those who are unaware, the lawyer who goes by bajo_cero2 on this forum is the one behind this case. It's been discussed over here: http://baexpats.org/expat-life/15683-discrimination-campeonato-metropolitano-de-tango.html Way to go on your new celebrity BC2!

Can you still afford to live here?

I find Peruvian food still to be a good deal here compared to in the States, but that may be because it's just not that widespread in the US yet.

    What Languages Do You Speak?

A little Portuguese and Italian in addition to the obvious two. Et pas de français ;)

    Can I vote?

My impression after talking to the locals is that Filmus just isn't very likeable, and Macri is the devil they know. Even the Cristina supporters said that they prefer a divided national/local government, because there would be runaway corruption with one party running both the city and the...

are bars closed sat nite for elections?

According to the link, the ban on alcohol sales begins Friday morning at 8. I'm at a loss to explain what on earth this has to do with elections. Seems a bit too WASPish for a Latin American country. That said, I'll be pretty impressed if they actually enforce this all the way until Sunday.

    Can I vote?

I could be wrong but I think you would need permanent residency to vote in the *local* elections, which are only three days away...and if you're asking now it probably means you're not registered to vote...which is another process I have no idea about. Only Argentine citizens entitled to vote...

Expat Names that sound strange to Argentines

There's also Leandro N. Alem. I'm sure there are others too.

Expat Names that sound strange to Argentines

So now your dog has an added value of 21%? :D And I don't think "Eva" in itself is politically suggestive. "Evita" definitely is.

Winter ( The worst is yet to come )

If you think for one second that July in Buenos Aires is unbearable, try Lima. Every day is 16 degrees and the sky is covered by a primordial soup of gray clouds the entire month. London must feel like Tahiti in comparison. At least the food in Lima makes it bearable. :D

    Frank's bar

No prob; although "Fank" would be a nice trick to weed out 90% of the people trying to get in (who assume it HAS to be "Frank").

Pasting and Passing On a Subtle Message from a Friend Here

Completely off-topic: I glanced at the title of this thread and thought it was about a message pasted inside the train cars of the SUBTE. :D (To be filed under "You know you've been in BA too long when...")

    Argentine women 18-22 relationship wise...

Ah, youth. You'll be OK meeting girls here, just don't try too hard. Find your way into a network of expats that includes locals and just go from there. If you expect to find a bride within six months, you're setting yourself up for disappointment when things don't go as planned. (Don't say...

Banksy -maybe?- present in BA on saturday 06/25

This area is a great graffiti spot and has a lot of potential to attract more public artists. I'm not keeping my hopes up for Banksy, but if he does come and leave his mark it will probably make my whole year. The hospital itself is in Barracas, just south of Constitucion station and west of...
