The government is donating US$4 million to subsidize the so-called Dakar Rally: http://www.cronista.com/negocios/El-Gobierno-autorizo-el-pago-de-us-4-millones-a-los-organizadores-del-Rally-Dakar-20141215-0048.html

This does not include, of course, the subsidies already provided through the destruction of natural habitat and archaeological sites, nor the medical and funerary care for participants and spectators alike.

Daresay it probably brings in more than 4 million for the country.

It sounds awesome. I'd love to go watch some of the racing action (beyond the start & finish ceremony at Plaza de Mayo). Is anyone planning on watching it?

Also on January 10 is the Formula E race in Puerto Madero (street circuit). Formula E is a new battery-powered series. The cars look like Formula 1 but obviously don't need gas. Many former F1 drivers are in Formula E now. http://www.fiaformulae.com/

That sounds interesting, it would be like F1, but without the permanent hearing loss!

If that's the case, why should the government have to subsidize them? Let alone pay them to destroy archaeological sites and ecosystems, and kill and injure people.

Governments are finally standing up to the Olympics, which is a similar but even more expensive boondoggle.

Because otherwise they'll just do Peru-Bolivia-Chile like the practically did last year? Think of it like how cities in America pay for huge stadiums so that some multimillionaire who owns a baseball franchise doesn't pack up and fuck off to another city.
