Does anyone know the English name for this fish? I found a few translations online (grouper, cod, pollock), but don't think it's any of those. The waitress at Artemisia told me it's a river fish, so maybe it's a variety native to this region that's not found in the States (hence, no English name)?

Just wondering :)

According to wikipedia, usually my resource for such matters, says that the fish known as abadejo is Pollachius pollachius which is pollock. Of course what argentines call food and what the rest of humanity calls the same food are rarely the same.

So in short, no, I have no idea.

Abadejo is similar to cod for me but its not cod. I don't think it really has an exact equivalent

I always thought it come from the sea.

According to an Argentine government website on the topic of fish, abadejo is Genypterus blacodes (English: pink cusk-eel or ling). It's an ocean fish, not a river fish. Here's the PDF in Spanish if you want to read more.

Happy eating!
