My wife is into opera and orchestras, but I am coming at you as a complete (and embarrassed) novice, so what is Opera Nocturno, is it a season or something?

Yes it's one of the 4 opera performances for each opera. The regular season is 7 operas.

There is the Gran Abono (opening night), Nocturno Tradicional, Vespertino (Sunday afternoon) and a new Nocturno Nuevo a couple days after the Vespertino
