Hello! My wife is originally from Argentina (still a resident) and we are toying with the idea of packing up and moving to Bariloche as I am able to work anywhere with an internet connection.

Having some difficulties finding a good website that lists long-term rentals (not the per-week, vacation rentals that are everywhere), preferably in English....although my wife can certainly translate for me until I'm able to read/speak Spanish fluently. Anyone have any good links to websites they can provide?

BTW - love the site, I'm sure this will be a great source of info for a "gringo" such as myself. ;)

Long term rentals ie. 2 years, unfurnished, need guarantee or large deposit, try here: http://beta.abcsur.info/ or the real estate agents.

Getting an internet connection can be a long process, I was recently quoted 40 days plus with Telefonica.

Long terms rental sites won't be in English, only short terms furnished vacation rentals.

Do you want to be down town or out on the KM's?

Have a look here: http://baexpats.org/expat-life/15558-bariloche-long-term-rental.html

A list of the Real estate Agents in Bariloche.

Be warned, you will probably need to see them in person and be persistent. When I was looking to buy a property I visited 20 agents and left my details and not a single one called me back.

Thanks, that is awesome..........we have her side of the family in BA so we're going to be leaning on them quite a bit for anything and everything. I see Tizado on your list of realtors, my mother-in-law has a good contact there that should be able to help. Browsing through the list of websites you provided, Tizado's seems to be the most organized and have the biggest selection.

We haven't settled on an area just yet. From all my initial research it seems like the KMs are the most appealing in the sense you get some space, nice views and you get more house for your money. Would you agree with that?

Thanks for the heads up on the internet connection. 40 days would just not work at all for me so that would be something I'd have to set up well beforehand. In fact, that might be something we could stipulate beforehand is that an actual live connection was already established in the property.

You get more for your money the further you go from the centre, but I personally feel it is also less secure in terms on house burglaries. Other may disagree, but many people have guard dogs. There are good views both in the centre and the KM's, it really depends what you are looking for, you will find apartments in the centre and houses with gardens in the KM's.

I purchased my property through Tizado, and after that experience don't have much confidence in them, it was a new building and amongst other things was told told gas and electric were both connected, they weren't and I'm still waiting for a gas connection 6 weeks after buying the property....

If you are coming long term, stay at a hotel/apartment while you look for a property, visit the areas to decide where you want to stay.

Many property owners will be wary of renting to people who they have never met (some require a guarantor who has property IN Bariloche).. and many would want extra money up front if you want them to get an internet connection in their name (minimum 6 month contract AR$ 130 month - they are landed with a AR$780 bill if the rentals contract doesn't go thought).

The cost of living is Bariloche is at least 20% more than Buenos Aires.

We bought our land through Ser de la Patagonia. They were great & very helpful.
We are out on Km 20 i nthe Peninsula & our street has no internet services so I use a modem through Personal. The speed on it sucks. After 3GB it cuts down to 128kbps, but at least it would be a quick solution till you can get dsl.
When we rented our long term house we didn't need a guarantee but we had to pay for it all up front.
Good luck & hope to see ya here.

Great advice and all things we are taking into consideration. I don't think separate trips would be feasible, so the stay-at-the-hotel-while-we-look is our best and smartest option. Her side of the family would most likely be able to provide the guaranty.....with them being residents I have to believe that would be assurance enough.

So what are the internet connection options? Is it all stricly DSL through the local phone provider? And is this secure, fast, reliable enough for someone to work with all day, every day?

Interesting. So if you rented something at 1000 $USD per month you had to give them 12,000$USD up-front for the rental? Did they give you the option of a guaranty/deposit?

We rented a 2 bedroom house for only $1500 pesos & paid 6 months in advance because we thought that was all we would need. Ended up paying monthly for the last 6. We got lucky. But we were looking at another house to rent as well & they were going to it the same way as well.
