From today's BA Herald:

"Bill Clinton was unexpectedly gushing yesterday in his praise for his policies of the Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner administration...Clinton's congratulations to Argentina on its Bicentennary were quickly followed by congratulations on its economic policy, pointing out that a debt/Gross Domestic Product ratio of around a third and the 'budget surplus' were the envy of the world...The Herald had more questions than answers last night as to the source of this glowingly positive report which airbrushed such developments since his last visit as spiralling inflation and the government's fiscal raid on Central Bank reserves."

Its one thing to give the customary contratulations on 200 years (of course what a rocky road its been with decades of dictatorship and 6 military coups in the 20th century plus a present day corruption climate throughout the govt. that gives the nation one of the highest corruption rankings in the world stuck between 2 backwater African countries.)

Sure live here on a local income. 9 hour days equal a monthly salary equivalent to a mere week back home. Plus the place is in horrible shape with low low standards, if any at all. I wonder what is the ethics to standards ratio?

Ah yes, Slick Willy. He who smoked but did not inhale. He who did not have sex with "that woman." Worthless bastard.

Ahh...! Just what's needed to cheer up a gloomy Fall day: an optimist's view of Argentina.:)

I would be asking what do they want with Argentina Bill and Hillary . There is a lot more to this than meets the eye and expect some secret deals to be made with a sweetener like the malvinas offered as the prize.

Well I don't see anything bizarre in that comment, what I see is the bizarre unproductive and negativity in your comment...

It wasn't my comment. It was the Herald's. A direct quote. Despite its frequent typos, the Herald remains a highly independent and honest paper. Even during the military dictatorships they spoke out against the government. Was that too a form of negativity?

No, but your title in the post is....

BTW: here is what the same reporter have to say about this, and remember that right now Argentina is in the process of restructuring her debt and with the financial crisis rocking these days Europe is affecting the exchange of bonds it was in need to clear up the pedaling disinformation pouring from the wall street gurus.

Here then comes Billy....Fits the Bill

So why was Clinton so magnanimous? The theories can be cynical (the terms of his lecture tour), fantastic (US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was so enraged by Brazilian President Lula’s affability towards Iran that she instructed her husband to praise Argentina to the skies in revenge) or even scurrilous but let us just leave it at that. All in all, it has been a great fortnight for the CFK administration — the Bicentennial and now Clinton too.

So who knows what to believe, but one thing is sure the Argentine economic situation was downgraded without any real motives, maybe by political means or speculation by the agencies in charge of rating the country risk.

As I posted earlier (but the post has somehow disappeared!) the Herald was stunned by Clinton's remarks in light of the situation with the Central Bank and also high inflation. If you read the article you will see that the Herald also considered Clinton's remarks strange.
