As a medic he never spared his efforts for the poor (was delivering medications he bought with his money to take them on a mule to the poor, etc.), promoted Education (rejecting an excess of Catholic influence).
When elected President, he kept this progressive path and uttered superior interests when he rejected contracts in the Oil industry. He was overthrown by the military coup of 1966. He renounced his pension as a President (only one in the history...) and any form of honor/retribution. He went back to practicing medicine and died in 1983, pennyless with just a tiny & humble house. People even had to collect money to be able to bury him.
He was overthrown by the Coup of JC Ongania (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juan_Carlos_Onganía) who put in place a Moral Catholic order (miniskirts forbidden, long hair for men forbidden, etc.) and launched the noche de los bastones largos (a truly suicidal move for Argentine's "Brain" capital) --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Noche_de_los_Bastones_Largos
