Bolsonaro has threatened to cut trade and ban Argentina from Mercosur if Alberto Fernandez and the Peronists win. As Brazil is our biggest trading partner this will have serious consequences for our fragile economy .

Brazil is not acting like a friendly neighbour and is not respecting the will of the argentinian people.

Can you imagine that Canada says to the United States people that you vote for Trump if not we will cease to trade with you . Would you consider that a sign of a friendly democratic society . Bolsonatro has no business interfering with Argentinas electoral process . If people do not wish to have Mauricio Macri as their president it is their democratic right . Argentina has never once threaten to cut trade with another country just based on their political convictions .. All societies of South America of different political beleifs should respect the democratic right of others to think and vote differently .

Actually, it's very easy to imagine that a different sort of Trump situation (ie. Trudeau hadn't predated him, and wasn't well-liked by the media and his own daughter) could have seen Trump make sure a threat. The difference is that in the US, the institutions are so strong that there's very little chance that it could ever come to pass.

God knows that the institutions in South America are dogshit but, still, this is just Bolsonaro continuing on (in very impolitic language) to pressure everyone else into changing the Mercosur rules to suit them, and it's not clear that he could get the Brazilian economic community behind him. Just like in the US, despite how "strongman" the leader may seem, it shouldn't be ignored that the people who control the congress - ie. the moneymen - can check the president.

When people say that Bolsonaro is the "Trump" of Brazil, they're talking not just about his utter baseness of language and the rest, but also about his completely undiplomatic means of projecting Brazilian power in South America. "We're the biggest, so if you don't do what we say, we'll cut you off." This sort of language is something that can rally the elites, but if It won't work, and there could be real consequences - if, for instance, the other countries coordinate against him, which incidentally is why he's trying to separate other leaders off from Argentina with side deals and the rest - then nothing will come of it.

TLDR: Brazil detaching from Mercosur - which Bolsonaro has also threatened and which backs these threats - would be gravely destructive to many important parties in Brazil, and if it looks like the rest of Mercosur will call his bluff, then he'll probably be unable to execute any reprisals, because the money people in Brazil won't let him.

Before this thread descends into hysteria, let me share a secret with you guys:

Brazilian presidents are not some type of "God Emperor" with unlimited power and who can rule by decree. They are restrained by a Constitution, a bi-cameral congress and a fully independent supreme court.
The Mercosur treaty was ratified by the Brazilian Congress, so only an act of that same Congress can remove Brazil from Mercosur. Funny enough, Bolsonaro does not hold any type of majority on either the house or the senate. Worse, he has been disowned BY HIS OWN PARTY (PSL Party Leader Calls Bolsonaro a “Bum” and Threatens to Implode Government)
So no, Brazil is not leaving Mercosur or ending trade with Argentina any time soon.

A year ago some people on this forum were going hysterical about Bolsonaro rounding up da gays, taking military action against Venezuela or implementing a military dictatorship.
I guess something new had to pop-up.

Do you honestly believe that in less than one year in power Bolsonaro has completed his objections ?

I beleive that over time if the southern cone countries fall to the extreme left he could use this as a excuse to fullfill his economic and military objections . Brazil in the last year has upgraded its military potential. taked about installing a us military base in Brazil and made threats to Venezuela .
Now he is threatening Argentina economically . It does not take a fool to see that he could up the ante and threaten us militarily if the situation in Argentina deteriotes .

The rhetoric from this president towards his neighbours has no parallels in Brazilian history

I dislike him as much as anyone, but please show me a case of him as president threatening military action against any country.
