Hi,

I'm hoping to draw on the collective wisdom and knowledge.

I'm new to BsAs and need to purchase somewhere to live (its a long story!).

  • Are there websites that give guidance on purchasing properties?
  • Would it be prudent to use specialist lawyer that supports expats?
  • Are there any particular issues or problems about transferring large sums of money into Argentina?
Grateful any advice

Why purchase? Seriously? You can rent a 500,000 dollar property for less than 1500 dollars a month.

If your dead set on buying, get an accountant not a lawyer.

GS_dirtboy knows a lot about buying an apartment in BsAs. Probably he can help you a lot. There is no single website like MLS in US, I went through the buying process, it was hard.
You need someone(a realtor) to help you to locate the apartment (which is not easy, again no MLS system), then a lawyer still needs to do the title for you. Yes, there is a big problem transferring large amount $ into Argentina. Many expats look to dump their real estate, if you really want to buy, maybe you can find an expat seller , you handle the $ outside Argentina and take care of the title by a notary lawyer inside Argentina. Then you got yourself a home, and a headache, like me.

Most of the rentals in BsAs are 1/2 bedrooms cheap ones, not the expensive U$500k+ type. If you do find a U$500k-1m one, the owner is likely well to do, and they do not want to rent it cheaply, they'd rather leave it vacant instead of letting low end tenants trash it. The one Nisman is staying, costs about 0.5m and the rent is 4-5k us$.

Most expats who rent for 5000-6000 pesos/month actually believe they are living in 500K usd properties.

Hilarious.

The press quoted the rental on Nisman's place at $45,000 pesos per month...! it's a 2 bedroom 3 bath unit one en-suite bath, over 100 m2...! US$4 K plus per m2

You can find some related information rather quickly by using the search engine (as opposed to waiting for new answers to an old question).

By entering the words "buying" and "house" in an advanced search (and searching only in titles and displaying the results as a topic list) you will find these threads:

4k dollar rent sounds right (if 45k in pesos). Bigger apts in the building can be easily around 500k. Looks like he has a smaller apt.

where? please guide me. I am interested.

and without a garantia??

This house used to be on the market as a rental for 19000 pesos http://www.grupomega.com.ar/web/index.html#

This houseis for sale for 580 or for rent for 20 http://argentina.inmobiliaria.com/casa-en-villa-crespo-4-dormitorios-344m2-3-banos-F150084

Those are just 2 examples I remember from my search but look around and you'll see that this is fairly consistent.

As for a garantia, be creative or buy one from a bank. The garatia is just personal guarantee by the guarantor it's really not the end all be all of security.
