Anyone else read Jim Holts' book; "Why Does the World Exist?: An Existential Detective Story" and want to discuss?

It delves into the perplexing question of why there is something rather than vacuous nothingness.

The musings and teachings of famous thinkers; philosophers, scientists, mathematicians, religious dogmas are all discussed. I'm finding it to be a fascinating price of work.

But then would a vacuous nothingness be something too? :)

Sounds great. And what is the general consensus about why there is something as opposed to vacuous nothingness?

Nope. We all have to come to our own personal conclusions.

Ok. Why did you want to find somebody to discuss the book with?

One can't expect a general consensus on the question of why there is something rather than nothing that is more on a philosophical level than a scientific one. That is not to say science will never have an answer, its just that it doesn't just yet.

Even if a definite answer is never found, one of the greatest achievements of the scientific community and also the philosophical community is that they are fine with differing opinions as long as there is no evidence to the contrary.

LostinBA, sorry haven't read the book so couldn't really discuss it with you.

???

Just because there is no "right answer" doesn't mean something is not worthy of discussion.

A man goes to a psychiatrist and says, "Doc, my brother's crazy, he thinks he's a chicken." The doctor says, "Why don't you turn him in?" The guy says, "We would. But we need the eggs." - Woody Allen from Annie Hall

How's that?
