Dear people scared of the (big) government,

This is what’s up: we all know that beauracracy sucks. But, guess what? When the village passed about 10,000 people, things changed. We had to institute rules and regulations and paperwork. You are required to follow all these rules and regulations because malicious people, and people with no common sense spoiled it for the rest of us.

But, the government is also your friend.

The government makes sure you’re not working in a factory at age 6. The government makes sure polio doesn’t come back. The governement makes sure Al Qaeda doesn’t blow up your mail box. Et cetera. Ad nauseum.

The government, and only the government, protects us against our own worst enemy: ourselves. Only enforceable laws can save us. The Bible will not save you when you have to no food, when you’re being stalked, when you’re discriminated against because of your color, religion or hair-do.

If we were lucky, the government in the US would also gets its act together so we could all get free healthcare. As it stands now, many doctors and people who run hospitals (to name two professions) would have people without insurance or money suffer through an illness until such time as they appear to be literally on the verge of collapse.

We cannot be left to our own devices. We need laws to protect ourselves from ourselves. That’s what the government does.

Of course we all also know that the government can spy on us, and kill in our name (etc) and for this too there must be a system of checks and balances.

Before we had these big welfare states - that is - Big Government - jobs were plentiful and each generation was better of than their parents. Now we have 50% youth unemployment in some European countries - with your Beloved Big Government. This whole generation is being destroyed because people love "free stuff" from the government.

While it does not apply to me directly or personally, I think this speaks volumes in its simplicity..

Not true. After WW2 the UK introduced the welfare state and lifted 1000s out of poverty for the first time.
The biggest expenditure in benefits is actually pensions not benefit scroungers.

Not to say that the UK doesn't have a problem with benefit scroungers. But there are bigger problems than this.

The unemployment has in Spain has more to do with a property bubble than a big government.

Please don't forget that at least in the UK the debt was caused by bailing out the banks, not our "massive" state.

Yes, I do believe that there are many legitimate functions of government, but sadly there are always power hungry people who are more interested in power and control than in the welfare of the people governed. That power has led to many of the horrors of the past century, the concentration camps, the gulag, the killing fields, the culltural revolution, etc., as well as many useless wars. The power of government has to be checked, and the U.S. constitution is a set of rules meant to check that power.

So 'checking' the power of governments will help stop these horrors? Its sad you believe this.

Reducing government control leaves it to corporations to step in that are even less democratic then governments. At least we can vote against a government.

Just take a look recent history and take note of the horrors the US have committed compared to the big governments or Europe.

You are so brainwashed.
