Apparently there was a fire in Puerto Madero and there could now be Mercury in the air. They are recommending that everyone stay indoors with their windows shut!

Yes transport is suspended for the area and our offices on Corrientes and Alem will be evacuated when its safer to leave...the Dr of institutional relations (!) for the Port says theyre burning pesticides or something..rumors of mercury also..

i was in the centre an hour ago (Cordoba y Florida area) and it was like tear gas, very hard to breathe, nausea and eyes stinging. even saw two people vomiting in the streets they were so bad.
came home to Palermo and now watching on the news. Advising to keep all windows and doors closed and if you were in it to shower and wash clothes.
if only i trusted the news to say what really is happening, Let's hope its just "smoke, smells and all ok" as they keep saying, as I had no choice to inhale it for 10-15 min before i could get a cab.

I laughed heartily when I read in La Nacion that the city government says that the cloud is not toxic but they can't confirm what the substance is yet. They don't know what it is but they know it's not toxic!
Okay, the logic that it's sufficiently diluted to not be toxic seems to work, but what about the people caught up in the big initial cloud?
I am in my office on Carlos Pellegrini and Libertador, closed windows, aircon off, the smell is making nose and throat scratchy and but that's about it.

For those who don't know it, the emergency number is 107 in case those who were exposed to it start to feel sick (nausea, headache, vomiting, etc)

It is not Mercury, (mercury in gaseous state impossible). The product is Sodium Carbamate a pesticide used in agriculture.
In high concentrations is extremely toxic, and cause poisoning.

Water should not have been used because it generates the smoke !!!!

Mercury can be in a vaporous state and travel through the air.

Obviously you have better data than the press information, you even know it was a Bayer product Sevemin..??
Thiodicarb: Dimetil N,N (tiobis (metilimino)carboniloxi) bis etanimidotioato.
According to Berni Head of Security, it was an Thiodicarb 35%, type pesticide arriving from China.

It seems it was not Mercury.. Mercury elemet vaporizes at 356.73 Degrees C.
