I am an american working remotely for a US company - currently living in Bali until the end of the year and looking into my next destination. BA is at the top of my list.

I have lived in Rome, Tokyo, Prague, Paris, Lisbon, Madrid, Brussels, Cairo, Puerto Rico, recently HCMC and now Bali...I think that's it. Like I said, I'm staying with my sister and her husband here in Bali - but they're leaving at the end of the year so I need to figure out my next place. This is going to be a medium-term relocation. 6 months or so until I decide to move on - or until my employer says they need me back in the states. Or I could end up staying forever!

My only absolute requirement for my next home is reliable and reasonably fast internet. Can I depend on having at least 512kbps/256kbps download/upload speeds in BA?

Yeah, it also depends on how much you are willing to pay as well and where you live.

I'm willing to pay whatever it takes (within reason of course). I'm paying $250/month here in Bali for 1mb and i don't get nearly half that most of the time.

I have heard the same thing about fibertel in feedback on another thread here. Looks like there are better alternatives though - so that's good news. There's only one provider here and though they seem to try they just can't deliver the speed. I'm barely getting by with the speed they provide but I do get by.

internet sux in b.a. get a satellite connection if you can.

This is barely considered high-speed anymore. You'll be able to get 1mb/256kbps or 3mb/256kpbs for a reasonable price. Once you go above that, it starts to get pricey.

And right now, Fibertel is still an option. They are suing for the right to operate and are likely to win their claims.

Here's some pricing:

Arnet: http://venta.arnet.com.ar/
Fibertel: http://fibertel.com.ar/seccion-94-cablemodem-Fibertel-banda-ancha.html

Plus, Fibertel is supposed to release even higher speeds soon.
