I was wondering if anyone has an experience with getting bloodwork done at Hopital Aleman.

I know I do need an orden from a doctor to get bloodwork done there (called and asked).

Does anyone know if I can just a) walk-in, see an on-call doctor to get the orden and get the tests done right away? or b) need to have a full-on appointment or c) need to see the specialist in question for the orden.

Trying to find out if to decide I should fast before calling/ going tomorrow. Everyone I know who goes there already has a doctor/insurance plan there etc.

Thanks!

i don't know about hospital aleman but you can get bloodwork done about anywhere, there are many places where you can just walk in (usually in the morning), without an appointment, and without anything from a doctor. there is already another thread on this website about this.

Thanks, however as the specialist I want to see is there, and they are reputed to be the best, I figure it may be easier to get it all done there. Although I suppose I could check out if Scherer can be done without an orden (it's supposed to be the best of private clinics, per recent thread).

Zissou,

You are overcomplicating things. Just go there during the working ours, so that the lab is open. There is a line in policlinic where people get appoinrment numbers. Explain there what you need. For routine things they will give you an appointment right away, and the doctor will give you papers to get the bloodwork. My guess is that you can do both things on the same visit, but they will tell you to pick up the results later.

I've been here long enough to know that things that should be straightforward never are, so I'm just trying to figure it out proactively ;-) This approach generally saves me time.

That said, it's helpful to know that I can see someone quickly and get the appointment right away. I would have confirmed this once I call tomorrow however now I know I should in fact fast.

Hospital Aleman is pretty straight-forward. I have a plan there and while I have not specifically had blood work done there, I have had other exams and tests that, once I had the order, I just had to go to the Policlinica as someone mentioned, register and get my number and sit and wait (usually not very long).

Worst case scenario, you might end up having to make an appointment (I doubt it), but since you're already there it will be quick to do.

I (an my daughter) have no plan there and have gone in for blood work without any issues. I just went to the laboratorio and gave a list (from the doctor) of things that needed to be checked in the blood, paid, waited 10 minutes, got pricked and in an hour or so I had the results. Wasn't an issue and there was very little wait time. Nice hospital, felt like I was at an American hospital back home (except for the whole Spanish-speaking doctors part).

For those who may be wondering about this in the future:

The Hopital Aleman is incredibly efficient. Most of the time you will want to enter to the left entrance on Pueyrreddon into the Policlinic. You walk right to the cash/reception people and tell them what you're there for.

I wanted to see a doctor so I paid for a walk-in visit and they gave me receipt etc and number. I waited about 5-10 minutes. My doctor (who had a resident with him I believe) was great, competent, friendly and offered to speak English or German as well. (not sure if German was really an option or if a translator would have come in)

The doctor noted since I didn't have insurance the hospital was one of the most expensive places for bloodwork and I could go elsewhere if I wanted. He didn't know the prices but said I should inquire with the PR/marketing/repuestas people. So I did. Went to the office (near main reception), someone came to me right away, made a photocopy, went back in, and came back within 5 mins with a breakdown of the costs of each blood test. In pesos they did add up but in dollars I was fine with it, plus I just wanted to keep everything simple/central at the HA.

With my orden for bloodwork I went to the lab area. Paid. Got a number, and had my blood taken within about 5 minutes. The results were ready two days later and can be obtained in person or via internet (although you have to sign up for that when you pay).

Amazing experience overall, I was in and out within an hour. I've been back since (to get a px, more bloodwork, see a specialist etc) and it's been equally amazing. Some specialists may take a while to get an appointment with BUT most also have walk-ins available if you go and wait.

Costs: each time you see a doctor or specialist it is 210 pesos or $48 CAD.

Basic but extensive bloodwork: around 700 pesos or $160 CAD (includes CBC, cholesterol, blood sugar, thyroid TSH/T4). Actually the more specialized tests were by far the costliest (thyroid tsh/ t4 being about 140 each).

Other more specialized tests seem to also be under 200 pesos but may take a while longer. However, for the more specialized tests I thought seemed to take a bit long to have results back, both Rossi and Schere would have taken significantly longer.

All this to say, extremely happy with the service of the Hopital Aleman and would suggest going there. Compared to US prices, or Canadian potential for delays, definitely proves to me that a two-tiered publc/private health care system is the best and most effective option.

Rossi takes 1 week. Costs less, and is almost as efficient.

I hope your tests came out like you wanted them to.

Scherer is highly recommended and do not require a orden. But they're not cheap. Unlike most labs, you can walk in at any hour they're open for the extraction, and (I think) you can pay with a credit card. You'll probably need to be in ayuno for the results to be valid.

They're helpful and knowledgeable on the phone if you want to call and discuss.
