There are many threads about getting an Argentine DL when you already have an international one.

Does anyone know how to get your first drivers licence?

My son is 17, he finally has his DNI, ready to go to ACA (that is where all his friends are going), but there you can not do it when you don't have a permanent residency. We still have temp visa (1 year/renewed).

I have heard that here you can just get your licence, without many tests, and no requirements about knowledge. My son drives very well, but has never driven on the road! So I would want him to take some classes at least to get used to the situations.

Any tips? Where to go? Driving schools? etc.

thanks

He probably will have to go to a driving school because he definitely will have to take the written and the driving test, but if he can't go to the driver's license center on Roca I have no idea where he would be able to do it. I am not sure about your neighborhood, but I do know of two driving schools on Cabildo in Nunez (close to Belgrano). I liked the people at one much more than the other. If you can't find one closer to you I'll look in my street guide and find the nearest cross street. They should be able to answer your questions about residency. If permanent residency is required at one location for a license it is probably required at all of them and I don't think it's possible go out of Ciudad BA to get a license in the provinces. The address in the DNI determines where the license must be issued.

I made English translations of the sample written test and can send them to you in an email attachment. The Spanish version of the questions is available on line in a pdf file, but I can send it in an attachment as well if you like. At least he won't have to study for the psychological test. Even I passed that one.

Steve,

I found this which I don't find very clear. Is it me or does it not really say anything about it. (it's about a "tramité" to renew your registro, right?)

So I guess going to an autoescuela will be a good option, I will start looking for one on the internet and see if they can help me.

I think my son would be happy with the English translations, thanks a lot.

thanks

Thanks! This one is really clear.

So starting with an autoescuela seems the right thing to do, and ask for a turno...

I'm reviving this existing thread with some questions I have in regards to the written exam. I would not deign to ask for answers to the questions, but rather to gauge the complexity of the language used in the exam (ie: only recently did I find out what a lomo-de-burro is (speed humps); a colloquialism that I threw me the first time I heard it).

To those who've taken the test I'd like to know the following:

1.. How would you rate the test in terms of understandability for the average English speaking expat with a good grasp of Castellano?
2.. Did you find any trick questions, or ambiguous descriptions that made the question hard to answer?
3.. Is the exam weighted more in one area that another.
4.. Anything I should really memorize, or are the questions fairly "common-sense" ?
5.. Does anyone know of any good study aids/ and or practice exams (bellow I've listed what I found, but I haven't any idea if the practice exams are accurately indicative of the actual exam ) Some of these are dry and really wordy.;

You can't study in any driving school or Transito won't acknowledge. Here's a list of accepted academies. Automovil Club Argentino is very good and I think you can take the driving test there, if I'm not mistaken, plus they should be able to tell you if you need a permanent DNI or not.

When anyone mentions driver's license test, always think of the old television series Taxi and "Reverend Jim's Driving Test." For me it is one of the funniest skits ever. May be good for a smile or two. Sorry to change the subject, maybe

I'm not sure what you mean here.
I know how to drive. I've held a Canadian drivers license for many years. Now I need to get a permit for Argetnina. I don't know that I need that kind of instruction. More to the point the experience of other expats in this area of the examination is more valuable to me.

Hey, always good to have a good chuckle; especially with an old classic like this ;)
