Why bother? US dollars are widely accepted in Canada.

Don't waste your time, you can exchange USD for CAD anywhere in Canada or just pay in USD if you want.

When I was working in Toronto I used to do it all the time and had customers that did the same

There is no point, you will get a horrible rate in argentina, wait until you get to Canada. Where are you travelling to? vancouver bullion gives some of the better rates in that city.

Get a good rate from anyone, then walk into a TD bank and tell them the rate you've been given, often they're authorized to match it.

Oh good. I read about it on trip advisor and everybody said it was better to take CAD, that I'd get an awful rate if I paid in USD but I guess it'll be ok to use them

This is partially true. If you walk into a pharmacy or convenience store and try to pay in USD, chances are you won't get a good rate. A regular store is not interested in the hassle - Canada is not Argentina, its currency is a stable one, and regular people have no interest in handling USD ("American dollars" as they call them).

But as far as exchange places go - you will do *much* better exchanging USD in Canada, than purchasing CAD in Argentina.

What they mean is that if you take USD and just use them in a store, they'll be accepted but you'll get a terrible rate. If you take USD with you and then change them at an exchange place, you'll get a much better rate than in any local store.

Oh and American coins are accepted on par, but don't try and take any of our Canadian coins to the States, even the parking meters won't accept them (oh and Canada did away with the penny a year or two ago, now it's the same round up / down policy as Argentina).
