Hi,

I'm an Australian musician/artist and am looking to hire a space for a gallery and hangout/space for creative people. It's not a money making venture (and I'm happy to pay for the rent), it's something I'd like to do for expats and locals here - have exhibitions and live music nights. I'm thinking of opening it 3 or 4 times a week during the day.

If anyone is interested in sharing this idea with me (you would have a space to create also) let me know.

Cheers :)

That sounds amazing! I don't have the funds to rent space but would gladly volunteer to help set such a place up... best of luck to you!!

I think a shared gallery space is a great idea, but there are some things to keep in mind:

In another thread you said you would be willing to spend $1000 pesos per month ($250 dollars). That isn't much money. It may be difficult to find much more than a garage or galpon for that amount. If you do find a place to rent, you will probably need a garantina and be willing to sign a two year lease. If you don't have a DNI it will also be difficult to get the utilities in your name as you will only legally be able to sign a six month lease.

If you are planning on being open to the public and selling artworks in your gallery you will need to find a space that has the correct zoning and you will need a business license (and at least temporary residency to get it). If you use the space for musicians to jam you will probably have neighbors calling the authorities. If you are running a business without a license you will be shut down quickly and the door may actually be sealed shut, leaving you without the ability to remove any artworks and other items from the premises.

There are already a bunch of places like this, all over the city.
Most operate below the official radar, just like art galleries with music do in every city on earth.

You might start by going and visiting a few existing spaces, and talking to the people who run them.
Maybe you could start a night at an already set up space.

There is a whole building of alternative art galleries, book store, and crafty knickknacks right on Santa Fe 2729.

Mite Gallery is there- they are hip and cool.

Hollywood in Cambodia, in Palermo, is another one to check out-

Havent been there, but Planeta Cubico looks interesting-

Formosa is a great little arts space up in Collegiales- mostly textile oriented, they have shows and, once in a while, somebody might play their guitar-

The city has 4 million people in it- there are alternative arts shows, many with music, almost every night somewhere.

I like checking out Ramona, for art openings and events.

Cat Power on Saturday night looks interesting-

Whats Up is usually good to, for exactly this sort of thing- arts, music, and blends of the two-

Thanks Steveinbsas, i've already considered these issues. Cheers :)

Another place to consider is Regazzoni's studio- he was doing music there for a while, not sure if he still is.
He does art shows there too, of other people's work, and always his own.
Its a wild place, down on the train tracks behind the Retiro station. No problems with neighbors complaining about noise- the nearest neighbors are the villa on the other side of the tracks.

is the space- el gato viejo.

Regazzoni has a studio in Azul, and spends a lot of time in Europe, too, but he is often there- he is quite a character.

Thanks for taking the time to send me these Ries.

Some interesting links!

:)
