Unfortunately, there are a lot of strays in this town. Maybe you'll consider one from the link below.

While I've always had malamutes (and one Akita), they've all been rescues from the pound or private parties except one. That one did come from a (responsible) breeder, but had a genetic defect that prevented his being shown.

I've never come aross them here - maybe keep an ey on mercadolibre and see if anything comes up.

We have fila brasileros on our farm. They are guardian dogs and a stranger isn't going to get on your property. They don't bother our horses at all. If they're introduced properly to smaller animals (cats, etc,) they are great with them. Wonderful with kids if that is a consideration. You might want to consider them - I have nothing but great things to stay about them. Very commonly used here in Argentina.

Filas can be very nice dogs, but they are powerful dogs that, in my opinion, are not suitable to be with children - they can injure them with affection. At the same time, large possessive dogs can also be dangerous: http://www.sfdogmauling.com/

You're certainly entitled to your opinion. But as a fila owner, my filas are very carefully socialized and wonderful with my babies. Obviously I don't leave them unattended (nor would I with any animal) but they are far more gentle and careful with my kids than the smaller dogs we encounter. (In fact, I have to separate my friends jack russell from the kids as she growls at them). My fila guards the babies, escorts them everywhere and is very gentle with them. I don't know if you have filas but as you know, filas are not particularly affectionate dogs and don't jump or roughhouse as a rule, esp with proper training.

Filas are a dominant breed and you do need to be an experienced owner and make sure to socialize them properly and give them space to roam but IMO, they're probably one of the best breeds I've ever had.

Here you see my vicious fila ;) with the twins as they play.

It's not an opinion, but rather a judgment made after considering evidence. I am fond of almost all dogs, but I'm circumspect about any dogs, not just large ones, in the presence of children. In a classic case, a Pomeranian killed a crying baby and, though I would never use such an instance to defame a particular breed, I would always be cautious with them and never leave them alone.

My husband had two filas that unfortunately passed away a couple years ago.

They are great dogs... super gentle with family, great protectors, and alert watchdogs. However in the case of my husband's filas, and many others I'm sure, they are notorious for not accepting strangers. And by strangers, I mean anyone not in the immediate family. Those dogs knew me for years and I could not be alone with them even after 7 years of living here part time! When my in laws adopted some small stray dogs, they had to be kept separate as well because they refused to accept them.

Perhaps they weren't properly socialized as puppies, but after that I would think twice about a fila. If you want protection they're great - they're scary looking and loyal - but it may mean never being able to leave strangers, friends, extended family etc alone with them.

Very cute baby and puppy pics Citygirl! :) Looks like life is good in the country.
