So after 2+ years living here, I've found some cool places to see rhythmic, authentic live music from around the world. Wish I had known about these places when I was a newcomer!

Wednesdays: Fernandez Fierro at CAFF in Abasto. Sweet Tango. $40 cover totally worth it Sánchez de Bustamante 764. http://www.caff.com.ar/programacion

Thursdays:
Foynes Bar, Palermo. Brazilian Samba, Live Band but Karaoke style. Usually full of Brazilians and there's a festive atmosphere. Niceto Vega 4984. No cover. 10pm-2am usually.

Pan y Arte, Boedo. Latin Jazz/Salsa trio from Cuba. The pianista is a killer and they have a phenomenal groove. They play from around 10pm-12am, also on Sundays at the same time. No cover. Boedo 880. http://www.panyarte.com.ar/

Saturday afternoon around 2pm at Notorious: Brazilian Samba with Feijoada. When I went 6 months ago it cost 50 pesos and it came with really good feijoada. Avenida Callao 966. http://www.notorious.com.ar/

Sundays, 10pm - 12:30am-
Don't remember what the place is called, but it's in San Telmo right on the corner of Balcarce y Mexico. They have an awesome Brazilian Samba Orchestra and fun dancing, etc. 20 peso entry (last I was there).

Enjoy!

p.s. if you have any places to add, please post them!

Oooooh, excellent! Thanks for posting this. Always on the lookout for live music in a new city. Can't wait to check theses out in a few weeks when I arrive :)

This is great! Am always after this kind of info and to thank you I am going to add:
Sanata Bar http://www.sanatabar.com/ (sarmiento 3501). Went there last week. Cool restaurant and bar playing live music sessions. It gets lively after 12 until around 3am. Best to check their site to find out who is playing and what.

Enjoy!

Cool. By the way, I went to the place on Balcarce & Mexico last night and there was no Brazilian Samba - it was closed. So I don't know if that's permanently finished or what.

I did, however, go to the all-night live funk jam at Makenna in Palermo and it was indeed, quite funky. These Argentines actually groove pretty hard. Starts late and goes late, like 1am to 5am. Fitz Roy 1519, free entry, http://www.makenacantinaclub.com.ar/esp/index.html

I'm very excited to check out the next Zizek on 25 Feb (a mix of live music and DJs). Cumbia-based over contemporary dance beats. I think it's really innovative and danceable (so much so that I was DJing it in the States) -- it's a shame it's not better known here in BA, where it comes from.

OK - that place Pan y Arte seems to only have the Latin Jazz trio on Thursdays - NOT on Sundays.

In San Telmo's Plaza Dorrego there are always a few bands. At Nefertiti (Humberto Primo 420), some friends of mine play there every night of the week except Sunday. They always have something good going on, whether it's music in Rock, Funk, Jazz, Blues, Oldies, whatever. They run a pretty tight ship - I know b/c it used to be my gig before I screwed it up! The place is a bit pricy, but it's a nice ambience.

Do any of the places with live music proposed, or others, have dance floors for doing compatible social dancing other than Argentine Tango - eg. salsa, zouk (Brazil), West Coast Swing (uses modern jazz and soul music), Lindy Hop (original big band, Ella, and some modern stuff), Slow Blues, new Hustle, or Carolina Shag (needs laid-back rock music)? We study AT in BA and have been dancing it at milongas there for 3 years but it will be hard on us if we move to BA and then can't dance anything else!

Sockhopper, I'll be DJing some electro swing in BA in the next few months, I hope. If I am, I'll make a post on baexpats.
