What is the name of the shutter used in most of the apartments here? They have a cord inside the house to open and close. Having trouble getting my landlady to repair since I don't know the Spanish name.

"Persiana" I don´t know if Persiana Americana is the correct name, but with "Persiana" s (Shutter) should suffice.

Do you mean the blackout shutters outside the apartment? "Blackout" will usually suffice. What happened to them? Sometimes they get stuck up above the window - a wire coat hanger can catch them and pull them down (just be careful not to break them)

I second persiana, some places call them cortinas de enrollar. The heavy metal shutters that open and close vertically that are on the outside of the windows and doors of buildings constructed in the 1920´s frech style are called "celosias".

Probably the portero can be able to fix it. Usually it is needed to go to the ferreteria and buy the cinta (what you roll) by meters.
