We've just arrived for a 3 month stay.
We will need to phone home.

Want to buy a cell phone with prepaid minutes to
use while we're here.

Advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Just went to movistar and claro in the Alto Palermo mall. Movistar told me the cheapest phone was 719 pesos. Wow that was attempted gringo gouging. Claro told me they couldn't accept visa cards from foreign banks. I have a citibank mastercard, but its US issued. Will they accept this?

Why do you want to phone internationally from a mobile phone here? The rates are extortionate. You can use a calling card from a locutorio, much cheaper.

And phones for a dead basic Nokia model should start around AR$170, no need to pay AR$700+.

Did you ask about the credit card? Always just try to do something if you ask then it becomes an issue otherwise no one notices. I use a foreign card sometimes and they just need a id with it, if the store accepts visa or mastercard it doesn't matter where its from. Or you can just pay cash. If you want to talk to people abroad cheapest way is over the internet, either gchat or skype.
