Hello Everyone

My name is Deborah (or Debby) and I just moved to Buenos Aires a week ago. I am going to be living here for at least two years because I am studying my masters at the University Torcuato Di Tella in International Relations and Political Economy.

I just moved into an apt in San Telmo. I love this barrio, although I am not sure that I will live here the whole time since my University is a good hour away on colectivo. But right now I think its worth the long commute to be living in such a great neighborhood. (I might think different in a few months).

Anyway, I would love to get together with other expats in this neighborhood and get to know you guys and your experiences. I am 27 years old and love going out to eat, drinking wine, chatting etc.

If anyone is interested in getting together please let me know.

Thanks

Saludos
Debby

There is a group that gathers every Friday for drinks, mostly in San Telmo. Look at this site for the thread on Thursday everning or Friday morning (or search for previous ones to have a better idea of the group)

I used to live 3 blocks from Di Tella and commuted to San Telmo regularly to see my girlfriend. The fastest route for you is to cross over to Paseo Colon and take the 130 bus. Yeah, during the day it's usually about an hour, but keep in mind that whenever people are protesting near the Plaza de Mayo and in front of those other government buildings on Leandro M Alem, the colectivos will divert around and it adds on another 20 minutes to the trip.

Hi Debby- I'm also in San Telmo and wanting to meet more local expats. Btw:I wanted to ask you how much are you paying for tuition at University Torcuato Di Tella?
Thanks,
Alex

Hi Deborah!
I'm 26 and am living here semi-permantely. I've met some great girls through this forum and would love to meet others! Drop me an e-mail: [email protected]

Hi Debby, and everyone else. Great to see people living in San Telmo, so many come here and live in the Island (Palermo), and fail to experience the wonders of places like San Telmo. As Roxanne says, there is a bunch of us who head out every Friday in the San Telmo area for drinks and socialising, with a great mix of ages and nationalities, which always makes for an enjoyable time.

There are always events being planned and enjoyed, depending on your interests, keep an eye out on the Expat Life part of the sirte, they vary from drinks, horse-riding, dinners, wine-tasting, literary groups, and we even have a Hash House Harriers group that runs every other weekend, which is always a great way to meet people in a relaxed atmosphere.

I'm sure you will have a blast here in BsAs, and especially in the San Telmo area, looking forward to meeting you at one time or another.

Hi Debby,

I am a soon-to-be retired university professor from the USA. I have had experience working on joint projects with several universities in Argentina. Based on my experience and on rankings of international universities, you made a great choice. Di Tella is an outstanding university for social sciences! Have a great time studying and immersing yourself in the culture.

Could it be that some people just don't like the feel of San Telmo and that it all boils down to personal preferences? It should also be important to note that many expats work in Palermo (myself included). I did the commute thing in LA for two years....never again. Besides, if Palermo is an expat trap, then surely San Telmo falls into the same category when looking at other neighborhoods in the city.

For me personally, coming from a city that is notorious for being spread out, I've never gotten used to the cramped feel of San Telmo. To others this may be comforting. Couple that with the fact that if I live in San Telmo and want to go out on weekends I feel limited to hanging out in San Telmo (downtown is a ghost town at night), less I invest in an expensive cab ride to Palermo, Recoleta, Colegiales, or Las Cañitas. In that regard I just feel like Palermo is more centrally located.

Sorry if I'm rambling but all this was to say, different strokes for different folks. I don't knock folks for living in San Telmo and people shouldn't knock others for living in Palermo.

By the way Debby....welcome :). Could you turn on your pm I'd like to ask you a question regarding your studies.

Quite agree with you there LA, it is horses for courses, and if you work in Palermo, it makes sense to live there. I was just saying its great to see people heading this way.

Just as an aside, you can take the subte to Palermo from the centre for 1.10, you don't always have to rely on an "expensive" taxi to get around. And believe me, after being home in Ireland for a holiday, taxis in BsAs are far from expensive, when compared to how much a short journey costs back there. And don't get me started on the buses.....
