Non-Stop Exodus: the list of multinationals that have already announced that they are leaving Argentina or moving part of their businesses to the region To the emblematic case of Latam, today the department store Falabella, also Chilean, was added. The other 10 departures from the country

There is a long lasting rivalry /envy between Argentinian and Chilean Firms like LATAM and Falabella, both leaving Argentina

Not in the least surprised. This could have happened BEFORE the virus.

In the USA, they arent leaving- they are just going bankrupt...
Their excuse is something about a global economic depression.
J.C. Penney, Brooks Brothers, Neiman Marcus, J. Crew, Pier1 Imports, Lord and Taylor- and dozens more- all "leaving" the USA because how terriblly Alberto and Christina have been ruining the economy.

Oh- wait, Trump did that.

Yes, its true, we are in a global depression, and Argentina is in it too.

When large companies (The smartest money involved.) exit a country, that is very telling. It basically indicates how tough the sledding is or is going to become. This is a sign of how bad things may become in Argentina. The stronger sign is that the movement is gaining traction .

Ries,

A lot of the retailers you mentioned in your post were very out of favor to begin with. They have lost their relevancy to the modern consumer's shift over the past decade.

JCP is going the way of Sears Roebuck. Brooks Brothers & Neiman Marcus are no longer perceived as luxury like in the past. J. Crew, Pier1 & L&T are fronts for Chinese merchandise / privately labeled.

Not much there in my opinion. (Respectfully pointed out.)

Retail was in trouble long before the virus. Online shopping has cut very deeply into brick and mortar sales. Amazon seems to be doing just fine.

The issue isn't that brands aren't seen as "luxury". The problem is that everyone is buying online. Brook Brothers continue online sales. Most products, including the venerable Brooks Brothers, manufacture in China or elsewhere in Asia.

The larger problem is not the multinationals leaving. There were never present in large numbers here to begin with because Argentina has never been a good place to make money. When was the last time you stopped by IKEA or HM in BA? Oh wait you cannot, there aren't any.

The tragedy for a closed economy like that of Argentina is the bankruptcy of small businesses, SMEs...etc.

You are correct , perhaps a new Post" US retailers going Under..! "is needed..?
Other readers may Post news on the retail situation in Italy, Germany, Russia , Czech Republic, maybe of interest...?

The discussion may turn over to discuss Brooks Brothers v/s Neiman Marcus... God Bless
