From what I've gathered from reading this forum is that it's better for me to bring a cheap unlocked cell phone from the US and then purchase a sim card in Argentina. I don't want to bring my iPhone (plus it's not unlocked) but I do have a Samsung t239 that works perfectly and is unlocked.

Here is where the confusion comes in, I keep reading about dual band, quadband, "world" phones, etc. According to the phone manual, the phone I want to bring is GSM 850/1900. Will that work in argentina? I just want to make calls and send texts, no email or internet

Fwiw, this is the phone http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=2051

Specifically, I've had several phones I or someone else brought from the US over the last few years. A buddy just brought me a Sumsung GT-S5230 which allows me to select between 900/1800 and 850/1900. It was set on automatic, but I just switched it to 850/1900 to test it and was able to send a message and the recipient received it no problem. I got a message when I switched it that said the setting may not work outside of US or Canada :)

So I would say you're in great shape to do exactly what you are thinking.
