recommendations for charming boutique type hotels?

Hello, I am looking for hotels in the centre which are like little hidden gems or "best kept secrets"? I am fed up paying a fortune for hotels which are at best ok! I am travelling on my own & needs to be in a safe area.

I am also on the scout for a yoga retreat, or spa resort within reasonable travelling distance from BsAs?

Not in the center, it's in Palermo, but 4 friends of mine stayed there and were REALLY happy. MIRA VIDA SOHO I think it was called. Also a wine bar.
