Rosario, Any Suggestions for Spending the Day?

We are going to Montevideo (to and from Mendoza) by bus in late January, and on the way back we will spend the day, a Monday, from dawn to dusk in Rosario. One reason is that one of the people I am travelling with was born there, but has not been back since she was a baby and wants to see the place she was born.

Any suggestions from people familiar with the city?

Since it will probably be hot, after visiting the big flag monument and the Fluvial, we will probably want to go to a river beach. One idea is to take one of the boats to an island, another is to take a collectivo bus north to the beaches north of the city. Any experiences to share?
