Is it cost prohibitive to send a 10 pound box to the us? Any guess on how much? And is there UPS or similar company here?

Depends upon if the contents are valuable and how fast you want to it to get there. If not valuable and/or time is not important use Correo Argentino. Otherwise you might consider DHL.

Anything that weighs more than 4 kilos (l.e. 10 pounds) has to be shipped from the central post office in Retiro.
Keep in mind that they take into account the size of the package as well, not only the weight.
Average size package my guess would be around U$D 50.00 bucks.
If you go to Retiro with your box, remember that it has to be open. It has to be inspected before allowed to be shipped.

Very expensive. I used to send very light, small boxes back to the states via Fedex on a regular basis. Always about $35US. God knows what a 10lb box would be.
