I have often wondered why basic life issues here seem so draining and time consuming and today's MetroGas saga has really helped me understand the service by numbers process that exists in Bsas. In my own humble Ireland the gas company who provides your gas will do so, update your metre etc as required with due warning and fix any issues that may threaten service ie I do not need my own personal gasman when I have a company to call upon.
As I speak my street and 4 other blocks today have been dug up by aprox. 35 Metrogas workers in the desire to provide private home metres to each domicile..I already had one but heck they needed to redo the pipes and give me a new one so Im now complaining especially as they are replacing the exact paving outside my house..quite impressive. With no warning however they shut off my gas having detected a small leak and it is my responsibility to find a gasista matriculada to come and address the issue. Now foolishly I thought that meant fixing and reconnecting the issue but what it basically entails is:
- 200 peso charge to check all gas taps and ensure the leak isnt emanating from there - done
- if successful reconnect the gas at a charge of 350 pesos after metrogas have approved his report or...
- if a leak is detected within the house, break up all walls with gas pipes to find which one is leaking..we have a 4 storey house..this is worrying in terms of mess, time and money. My own cleaning lady had no gas for 1 and 1/2 years in her building due to the same issue in 2010.

This gasista is a sweetie and just left with his 200 pesos having reconnected the water heaters as he hates to see small kids with no hot water for the weekend ..he's coming back on Monday when the wind dies down to give his verdict on the initial taps test. Interestingly my neighbours and their neighbours had gasistas working at the metres tonight..and there was a gasista truck parked in the next block. It all seems so antiquated and a bit of a scam to serve the 40,000 registered gasistas in Bsas..shouldnt Metrogas take responsibility for the safe provision of gas in the homes they service? I say this as a big fan of metrogas who have been very efficient in my 7 yrs here...but I have seen the same pass the buck issues by telefonica, my electrician re the pump and the septic tank etc...I really feel its impossible to have a full time job, children and have a property here due to the sheer number of maintenance issues that require me to be omnipresent and a specialist on what the issues are.

Just wanted to share my revelation on why simple tasks outside bsas are so onerous here due to the multi and unconnected people involved in the process...
