Shipping One's Own Art Out Of The Country

I've taken over 30 paintings out of the country at one time and posted about it.

Even if the artwork is self created, you will have to deal with the office of artes visuales, the secretaria of culture, and (worst of all) the aduana....that is if you are taking the works out of the country yourself.

If you want to ship the only way I know of is to use a dispanchante aduana.

It will be more expensive than you can imagine (at this point).

You can read more here: Shipping back to the US

Yep, as Steve said, even though it's his own art, he still has to have permission from the gov't for it to leave the country. Ridiculous but there you have it.

I'll check with a friend who just left Argentina and find out how she shipped her stuff (including artwork I believe).

I'm moving this to this thread:

We're talking about Art he created.

HotYogaTeacher's boyfriend was/is an artist and when they left he shipped a bunch of his own stuff. Of course it only took about 2-3 months to make it through customs in Argentina, before it finally got a ship, but hey, what did you expect?

What tips are you looking for? I can contact them and find out if they have answers to your question(s).

Lee, take the approach of going to the aduana website. That way you get it from the horses mouth .
I did this with the container , and when I was aproached by shucksters wanting a little something to wet their beak , Id wip out the printed requirements.
Buenos Aires has no scarcity of on the spot ill informed official folk that will go out of their way to pluck a non cit out of their feathers. Its a sport here.
If you need help translating the website , just send me a link and Ill translate it and email it to you .
I think of the hoops they made me go thru and I just cant allow anyone to go thru that....

In Argentina you can bring things in. Or you can even create them there. But getting stuff out is pure hell.........
Dismount them from the stretchers, roll them up and place them in heavy plastic tubes {like 6" sewer tubes} cap them and head for Uruguay. Shipfrom there. Or wait for French Jurist to chime in. he is the go to man regarding art work.

yes, sticking them in tubes is the easiest, cheapest and fastest solution however you don't need to go to uruguay. just stick them in the tubes and make sure they will fit in your suitcase. then check your suitcase as you normally would. i just did this a couple of months ago and it worked fine, no questions asked whatsoever.

heck you could probably even carry a tube with you on the airplane and i doubt anybody would say anything. but if you want to play it safe, store all the tubes in your checked luggage.

it's when you are taking something out that is in a frame which attracts the most attention.

When I was living in Turkey... I came and went out of the country several times..with several paintings in tubes. Just like there..in Argentina..the second you have to go through customs (shipping in or out)..the vultures want to get their hands on some cash. Avoid shipping and bring it with you on the flight as extra luggage. 100 paintings (on stretchers) is much more than a snack... the vultures will not pass the opportunity to feast!
