Skype Newbie

Just created my 1st Skype account with my email address.
Trying to add a "contact", ... it asks me for my phone number.
Entering my Phone number, ... it says It can not verify my number.

Pressed a button to Automatically Added Friends.
It sent me email saying "successfully added friends".

How to add a "contact"?
Any help how to pass this HUUUGE insurmountable task much appreciated.

You can search by contact or my phone number (if that contact has added his/her phone number or has a Skype phone number). Most people just have an account like name.surname

It's been so long since I've used Skype I can't remember the process. I now use WhatsApp to communicate with my old Skype contacts.
