Is vegetable shortening available here anywhere? I've seen lard in the stores, but I don't remember seeing vegetable shortening...
If anyone knows I'd appreciate it.

hi...

I know they have animal lard but that would not be the same. Here is a substitute that should work well for you: I would substitute the shortening for butter. If your baking , use unsalted butter. In Argentina the water content in the butter , as I remember, was lower, so that should not be a problem and you wont have to compensate. Here is a link that has helped me . http://www.ehow.com/how_7488101_sub...ble-shortening.html?ref=Track2&utm_source=ask

Lard is pretty much king here... it's in everything from pizza dough and medialunas to alfajores and even Oreos (pretty much any place you'd find vegetable shortening in the US.) The vegetarian places I frequent use butter in place of lard, so yep, sounds like your best substitute.

by the butter section you can get Vegetalina. It come in a big hard block, not like Crisco.
