Verb for Text?

According to WordReference (a great site!) the verb for text in Spanish is "mandar un mensaje de texto". But I'd guess that there is some less wordy expression used here.

In Argentina, it would be "mensajear" .... Although I only see that on publicity materials. I think it's more common just to say "mandar un mensaje."

I'm not native. However, in my experiences (11 years), that's not said in everyday, casual conversation. I know the OP didn't specify that explicitly, but I just thought I'd opine.

I am native, there is no shorter way, JenH got it right: mandar/recibir mensaje de texto or mandar/recibir un texto ( this last one is the most commonly used )

Yep, I've heard of "textear" as well. I used to use "textar" back in '07, but heard that "textear" was legitimate slang for "to text". Otherwise, jenh has got it.

And I had never used "SMS" for a text before I moved here. But it's de rigor here. It takes longer to say, but it's one letter less than "text".

Yeah but it's five syllables (you join the m + s slangly instead of pronouncing the "e" at the end of the "m" and beginning of the "s" separately)

For what it's worth, the most common way in Argentina (at least in Bs As) would actually be mandar un "mensajito".
