At the risk of self-aggrandisement, I did want to offer answers to your voice telecommunication questions, in return for your kind and extensive answers to my dumb BsAs newbie questions.

I am a VoIP engineering consultant by trade, chiefly doing work for American VoIP companies, but also some others overseas. My specialisation is in the sort of programming and integration required to build service delivery platforms for VoIP ITSPs (Internet Telephony Service Providers) on the backend, e.g. companies that do the sort of thing Vonage does. My experience is overwhelmingly with fixed-line issues, but I also have a broad IT, software development and IP network engineering background.

I don't know a lot about mobiles. However, I can probably can help you with questions about making cheaper calls to/from Argentina through some form of toll bypass (other than Skype - that one's obvious and I have little to add), wi-fi, why your VoIP calls might sound choppy, encryption and security for IP data, network technologies useful for doing business internationally (IP PBXs, VPNs, etc), etc.

If any of you have questions in this general subject-matter space, please ask! I am extremely grateful for your insights on this forum and would love to give back somehow.

Were are you based ?

Right now, in Atlanta, and my company will continue to be based there.

I myself intend to be based in BsAs in reasonably short order. :)

Here's a question, of debatable pragmatic value to anyone else: If I'm using 3g and I'm in a car, is the network smart enough to maintain connections as I go in and out of range of different cellphone towers?

Hmm, the thread seems to be visible again.

As I answered to you in a PM, the fundamental answer is: yes. At least, under ideal conditions.
